2017 FINA Worlds: USA Takes Early Lead in Medal Table

2017 FINA WORLD SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

*NOTE: Open water swimming, which has already been completed, was factored into this medal table.*

The USA broke ahead in the medal table on night 1 of pool swimming competition at the 2017 FINA World Championships. Katie Ledecky gave the Americans their first gold when she won the 400 free in Championship Record time, putting up the 2nd fastest performance in history with her 3:58.34. The Americans then went on to win both 400 freestyle relays, with Mallory Comerford (52.59) and Caeleb Dressel (47.26) breaking their respective individual 100 free American Records in the process. The women’s 400 free relay squad of Comerford, Kelsi Worrell, Katie Ledecky, and Simone Manuel also took down the relay American Record.

France is tied for the 2nd highest total medals with 6 and tied with the U.S. for highest total golds at 4, though all of their numbers so far come from the open water portion of these championships. Italy also has 6 medals, with Gabriele Detti adding a 400 free bronze to their total tonight.

I’d like to see an overall medal count, including diving, sychro, high dive & water polo.
