2017 M. NCAA Picks: U.S. Olympians Dressel, Held to Battle in 100 Free

2017 MEN’S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

100 FREESTYLE

U.S. Olympians Caeleb Dressel, Ryan Held (41.61), and Blake Pieroni (41.44) are the headliners of the 100 free at this season’s NCAA Championships. Dressel, the heavy favorite, will be chasing his own record of 40.46, while Pieroni and Held, who blasted a pair of personal best 41s at their respective conference meets, will look to join him in the 40-second range.

Returning All-Americans Michael Chadwick (Missouri) and Brett Ringgold (Texas) will look to shake things up. Chadwick cleared 42 for the first time this season, clocking a 41.80 at Missouri’s midseason invite. Ringgold is only 16th on the psych sheets, but got a qualifying time very early in the season, and so hasn’t had to do much else but focus on this meet since.

There are several swimmers bunched into the 42-low range who will compete for a spot in the final. Leading the way are Wisconsin’s Cannon Clifton, Tennessee’s Kyle DeCoursey, and Ohio State’s Matt McHugh with a pair of 42.0s. Not far behind in the 42-low range are NC State’s Justin Ress, Cal’s Justin Lynch, Minnesota’s Bowen Becker, and Stanford’s Sam Perry.

USC’s sprint duo of Santo Condorelli and Dylan Carter return to the NCAA stage after taking an Olympic redshirt in 2015-16. Both swimmers were finalists at the Pac-12 championships, but Carter has been faster this season with a 42.14 that landed him 11th on the psych sheet. Penn State’s Shane Ryan also returns after taking a redshirt. Ryan is a likely candidate for the top 8, as he enters with a 41.86.

Leading the freshman contingent is Arizona State’s Cameron Craig, who won the Pac-12 title in this race with a personal best 41.95. Florida’s Maxime Rooney and Alabama’s Zane Waddell are also among the up-and-comers, as they enter with a pair of 42-lows.

TOP 8 PREDICTIONS:

I think Dressel and Held are both at their prime right now. Rio and conference championships gave them a lot of confidence. It’s going to be a showdown between those two.

Haas is my dark horse. Not to win, but with a good swim I think he could slip into the top 3, at least top 8. The guy splits 18s in relays and has a 1:30 in the 200, you figure his 100 has to be at least a 41.5

The Olympic 4th place finisher can’t make the top 8 at NCAAs? This is ludicrous!

Looks like since this summer he has lost interest, changed coaches, and started a new career in modeling.

What is Santo Condorelli hiding… there’s no way his PAC12 performance was all he’s good for

No doubt Dressel is going to win the 100. I believe Held’s best chance to de-throne dressel is the 50. Then again Held is an amazing swimmer and could surprise us!
