For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of two finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, while places 9 through 16 make the B final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups” and “Downs” after each prelims session at the Men’s NCAA Championships. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final and “Down” refers to swimmers in the B final.

After day 4 prelims, the Texas Longhorns are projected to win by nearly 200 points, getting 6 swimmers into the championship finals. Cal sould be safely locked into the runner-up spot, as their 5 scoring swims have them projected to finish about 50 points ahead of the Florida Gators.
Things get interesting, however, in the battle for 4th and 5th. NC State is projected to finish about 28 points ahead of the Hoosiers, and they have 2 A finalists tonight to Indiana’s 1, so they should be able to hold them off. While they try to chase down NC State for 4th, they’ll also have to hold off USC, who is projected to come just 6 points behind Indiana, if they want to secure a top 5 finish.
Below, you can see each team’s individual updown count, their relay updowns, and their projected scores for tonight based on their prelims performances.
**NOTE: Up/Downs do not include platform diving or the 1650 free. Diving prelims have not yet concluded, and the 1650 free is a timed final event.**

Nope. Stanford.
Can anyone direct me to the results of the platform diving prelims? And being especially greedy, how about the 1650 results, pending the final heat tonight. TIA!
ON THE RISE – IU / USC / SOUTH CAROLINA / ASU / NOTRE DAME
ON THE DECLINE – MICHIGAN / TENNESSEE / ARIZONA / OHIO STATE / UVA
What happened to Arizona and Tennessee? Werent these SwimSwams dark horses to be in contention for relay wins? Both programs have struggled mightily on both mens and womens sides this year. Has UVA ever been good on the mens side in recent years?
USC looks fair at best. Mulcare and Carter are good, condorelli looks off, and the rest of Salo’s group look to be struggling.
South Carolina and Notre Dame look great no question. Asu and oh st are non factors.
take away the DQ in the 200 free relay and SC would be fifth at this meet.
Malone was off. Everyone else was on, multiple best times from Mulcare, Vissering, Carter, Tribuntsov, Condorelli
Absolutely not even close to being true. Take a closer look at the 200 IM and many other races before you say “everyone else was on.”
Cal wins next year
Agreed their the favorite, but states class is loaded too. Will be a good one. Not sure what’s up with H stuart but had he swam close to best times, NC state takes third. If he’s back next year and their class they’ll be with Cal
Michigan looks pathetic
Does this take into account 1650 scoring?
No it doesn’t
And diving too. Does SC have any divers?
USC has one diver that made the platform A finals.
StanFord has one in A final too and a couple that could score in 1650. IU has one diver in consols and 1 sWimmer in 1650 that could score. Battle for 5th will be exciting!
Hopefully next year IU will focus their main taper on NCAAs because they’ve looked tired, with the exception of Pieroni and Elkamash. Every big 10 team has been off. IU’s divers have helped keep them in a good place. A top 5 finish will be tremendous for the program but wish a few more swimmers hit their taper again.
