For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of two finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, while places 9 through 16 make the B final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups” and “Downs” after each prelims session at the Men’s NCAA Championships. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final and “Down” refers to swimmers in the B final.
REFRESHER: TEAM SCORES THROUGH DAY 1
1. NC State 40 2. Texas 34 3. Florida 32 4. California 30 5. Southern Cali 28 6. Univ of Georgia 26 7. Stanford 24 8. Louisville 22 9. Indiana 18 10. Wisconsin 14 11. Michigan 12 12. Auburn 10 13. South Carolina 8 14. Harvard 6 15. Arizona State 4 16. Missouri 2
Following day 1, the NC State Wolpack held an early lead over the defending champion Texas Longhorns, but the Longhorns are set to bounce back to the top of the standings in day 2 finals. Texas will have 5 “ups” and 8 total scoring swims tonight, giving them the most A finalists and the highest total.
Cal and NC State will look to fend off Florida. All 3 teams have 5 scoring swimmers tonight, but the Bers and Wolfpack have 3 “ups” to Florida’s 2.The Gators do have a slight edge over Cal, though, since they finished ahead of them in last night’s 800 free relay.
Below, you can see each team’s individual updown count, their relay updowns, and their projected scores for tonight based on their prelims performances.

Texas with an A final for 1 meter
Big swim from Metin Aydin out of Hawaii to make the B final for the 200 IM! Great to see some less prominent swim schools respresented in finals.
Oddly enough he is the only swimmer to post a 1:43 in the event. He was bracketed by a 1:42.99 and a 1:44.00. Further, 8 swimmers finished in the 1:42 range, and 13 in 1:44.
Missouri was seeded to score 38 points through day 2 of the meet. They will likely have nearly double that in swimming points after tonight, and they have a diver today. They are seeded in the psych sheet to score 112 points total this week, and if they come anywhere near staying on this trajectory it would put them closer to 200+ points and into a race with, and maybe just outright ahead of UGA for 7th. They are my bracket buster, even though I had them as a dark horse to move from 14th pre-meet to as high as 10th in my predictions. This is probably officially a trend now too, since they were +59 from their psych sheet… Read more »
Texas should have some divers also
Only (barely) finaled one diver, Mark Anderson. 8th spot
Diving events are the same setup as swimming events. 8th spot is last A-Final but the top 16 all score. There are 3 total diving events for a maximum of 60 individual same as swimming.
Another newbie question.
Are the projected scores listed based on the average score for each heat (up average being presumably around 15, and low average presumably around 5) times the number of swimmers per school in each heat?
Or do these projections account for expected performance of the individual swimmers within each heat? For example, is Florida expected to score 20 in the 50 free by this model due to Dressel’s dominance, or does the model assume they will score 15 in this event?
They are based on their actual prelim placing. The “Projected Day 2 Score” also includes Day 1 score added in.
Awesome! Thanks!
I’m asking help from swim swam and all of its readers. We need someone commentating this meet for the live stream. If anyone has contact information for our Me or someone to contact I would gladly go downtown to commentate this meet! Not asking for any compensation except for two tickets. Any help would help us all out.
I second this. The meet announcer (who I think is great) is really hard to hear on the live feed. We need someone easy to hear that can read out splits, etc, so we know how fast these guys are going. They finally added a running clock overlay to the feed (not having it for the 800 FRR was criminal) but without splits it really only has limited value.
