2017 US Junior Nationals: Only One Scratch for Day 1 Finals

2017 U.S. JUNIOR NATIONALS

Out of all qualifiers for the A, B, and C finals of the women’s and men’s 200 butterfly and 100 breast, and the timed finals of the women’s 800 and men’s 1500, there was only one scratch. Matthew Jerden, the 15th qualifier in the men’s 200 fly, declined his spot in the B final. Jerden, from Indiana Swim Team, improved his seed time by .12 in prelims, going 2:03.51. His absence will move William Kamps of Academy Bullets into the B final and Lawrence County Aquatics’ Paul Gabhart in the C final. Kamps dropped .18 in prelims to finish with 2:04.01, the 17th-fastest time, while Gabhart went 1.25 seconds faster than his two-week-old personal best, for 2:04.94.

No one dropped out of any of the three finals of the women’s 200 fly, women’s 100 breast, or men’s 100 breast. Furthermore, all the distance freestylers seeded in the top 8 of their respective events are expected to contest the timed finals tonight.
