2017 W. NCAA Up/Downs: Battle Brewing For 2nd Between Bears & Aggies

2017 WOMEN’S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of two finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, while places 9 through 16 make the B final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.

With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups” and “Downs” after each prelims session at the Women’s NCAA Championships. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final and “Down” refers to swimmers in the B final.

Following day 3 prelims at the 2017 Women’s NCAA Championships, Stanford is in position to possibly build their lead to triple digits. With 10 individual scoring swims, the Cardinal will start to run away with it. Behind them, Cal and Texas A&M will battle for the runner up spot. Each team has 6 individual scoring swims, but the Aggies have 4 “ups” to Cal’s 3.

Missouri has chance to break into the top 10 tonight with their 4 “ups,” as they’re now projected to be tied with USC for 9th. They’ll have Michigan hot on their heals though, as the Wolverines look to hold onto a top 10 spot with their 2 “ups.”

**NOTE: UP/DOWNS DO NOT INCLUDE DIVING, AS 3-METER PRELIMS HAVE NOT CONCLUDED**
