2017 W. NCAA Up/Downs: Texas, Georgia Battle Closely for 4th on Day 4

2017 WOMEN’S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of two finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, while places 9 through 16 make the B final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.

With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups” and “Downs” after each prelims session at the Women’s NCAA Championships. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final and “Down” refers to swimmers in the B final.

Following day 4 prelims at the 2017 Women’s NCAA Championships, the Cardinal is set to reach a sizeable lead, securing their 2017 NCAA Championship title. After putting 8 swimmers into finals, Cal looks safe to hold off Texas A&M for the runner-up spot.

The battle for 4th, however, will be a close one between Texas and Georgia. As of now, the Bulldogs are projected to take 4th by just 13 points over the Longhorns.

**NOTE: UP/DOWNS DO NOT INCLUDE PLATFORM DIVING OR TIMED FINALS OF THE 1650 FREE, AS THE EVENTS HAVE NOT CONCLUDED. The 1650, however, has been factored into the predicted scores based on seeds**
