How Everyone Did

There were three relatively easy-to-predict events on day 7, along with a few where the Pick ‘Em majority was head-scratchingly wrong.

Event Winner % Correctly Predicted
Women’s 200 back Emily Seebohm 9%
Men’s 100 fly Caeleb Dressel 17%
Men’s 50 free Caeleb Dressel 31%
Mixed 4×100 free relay USA 87%
Women’s 50 fly Sarah Sjostrom 98%
Women’s 800 free Katie Ledecky 100%

Every single player picked Katie Ledecky to win the 800, which shows how seriously everyone is taking this competition – it wasn’t worth sacrificing 7 points to jokingly select Dean Farris.

Meanwhile 98% of players picked Sarah Sjostrom to win the 50 fly. There were a handful of blank selections along with 3 picks for American Kelsi Worrell and one for Japan’s Rikako Ikee.

At the other end of the spectrum, only 9% of players saw Emily Seebohm winning the 200 back after a disastrous Olympics. Katinka Hosszu was the popular pick, with some Kathleen Bakers thrown in.

And Pick ‘Em players were thrown off in startingly high numbers by Joseph Schooling‘s now-infamous post-practice 50.7 in the 100 fly. Just 17% picked Caeleb Dressel to win even after beating Schooling head-to-head at NCAAs and hitting the world’s #1 time at U.S. Nationals. 77% of players picked Schooling, who wound up tying for 3rd in 50.8, certainly the first time in history a rumored practice swim has turned out to be faster than actual verified in-meet performance.

A few more stats of note:

  • Not a single player picked Egypt’s Farida Osman anywhere in the top 4. She took bronze, Egypt’s first-ever Worlds medal.
  • Likewise, no one picked Hungary’s Kristof Milak anywhere in the top 4 of the 100 fly. He took silver, ahead of Schooling and James Guy.
