On day 5, the USA maintained its lead in the medal tables in terms of both total medals and total golds. They remain 4 gold medals ahead of 2nd-ranked Canada in total golds with 9 golds thus far, and 9 medals ahead of 2nd-ranked Hungary (13) in total medals with 22 medals. Contributing to the American medal total were Michael Andrew (50 fly gold), Grace Ariola (50 back bronze), and the women’s 4×100 free relay (silver).
Hungary and Japan each cracked double digits in total medals. Hungary earned some more hardware courtesy of Ajna Kesely (1500 free silver), Kristof Milak (50 fly bronze), Marton Barta (400 IM silver), and Balazs Hollo (400 IM bronze). Japan added a pair of medals thanks to Natsumi Sakai (50 back gold) and the women’s 4×100 free relay (bronze).
