Competition at the 2017 World University Games continued with day 5 finals in Taipei. Tonight, we saw swimmers compete for medals in the men’s 800 free, women’s 200 breast, men’s 100 free, and women’s 100 fly. For a full recap of the day 5 finals events, click here.
Japan took over the lead in terms of total golds on day 4, but the USA brought it back to a tie with 2 wins on day 5. Japan’s Kanako Watanabe brought home a gold in the 200 breast, but Olympic gold medalist Ryan Held (100 free) and Hellen Moffitt (100 fly) brought in 2 wins for the Americans to bring it to a tie between the 2 countries with 6 golds each. In terms of total medals, the USA still leads by 2 with 16 medals to Japan’s 14 medals.
Winning their first medal of the meet tonight was South Africa courtesy of Tatjana Schoenmaker‘s silver medal performance in the women’s 200 breast.
