European record holder in the 200 backstroke Evgeny Rylov of Russia has scratched the 100 backstroke, after coming in seeded fifth with 52.74. Instead, his countryman and junior world record holder Kliment Kolesnikov, who qualified in the 200, will be taking Rylov’s spot. Kolesnikov will swim in heat four this morning.
Also out of the men’s 100 back will be Great Britain’s Chris Walker-Hebborn, as we reported earlier, who came in seeded 10th. Zac Incerti is taking his place, and will swim in heat five.
12th-seed Gabriele Detti of Italy has scratched the men’s 200 free, likely to focus on the longer distance events, after grabbing a bronze medal in the men’s 400 yesterday.
However, the biggest scratch of the morning is fourth-seed Leah Smith in the 1500 free. USA Swimming, when contacted for comment, said that Smith was going “to focus on the other events on her program.”

It’s not a prelim scratch but a semi one, but you can add Katinka Hosszú (100 back).

Local news say that Hosszu scratches 100 back. Can someone confirm please?

Lot’s of strange scratches… Or is that just me noticing something that’s not there?
Last April, at Canadian Trials in Victoria, a noroviros went through one of the hotels and took down a bunch of athletes. Wasn’t food poisoning, it was a stomach virus that came on very quick. Is it possible that the same thing might be happening in Budapest?
No way. It happened only at Kazan Worlds.
Surprised no SMOC scratch in the 100br. She looks a bit out of sorts, as expected this week, and will have a tough fight to medal in the IM. Bold to go into it with, possibly, a SF in her legs.
Wouldn’t it have made sense to make decision on Smith 1500 before the meet so US could send another swimmer? Or is there a reason that a replacement wasn’t an option (such as roster limits)?

Completely agreed. It’s like she didn’t look at the world schedule before making the decision at nationals. Smith’s selfishness or her lack of planning cost Hannah Moore an opportunity to represent her country.
Excuse me, but… Why to write such bad things about this swimmer? Leah Smith, probably, saw, when at Budapest, that she could not win a medal on the 1500, but realized that she could be of better use for her team with the 400IM, the 800 meters relay, and so on. She did not realized that before, but after the 400, she could have changed her mind. After all, her qualification in the 400IM was a surprise…This decision to scratch the longer event is a rational decision taken on the battlefield and very probably with her coaches. If she adopts that mentality, she would scratch the individual 200 Free also, since she has less of a medal chance in that than the 1500.
Maybe it’s just the Cavalier in her
She should have done like Elizabeth Pelton did in the 200 IM in 2009. She said she wouldn’t swim that event at Worlds and that let Ariana Kukors join the team. She turned out to be the surprise of the meet and set a world record in the 200 IM.
I really though Rylov would be a medal contender, this is a perfect sweet spot for him with his 50 speed and 200 endurance. Shame.
