Competition at the 2017 World University Games continued with day 2 finals in Taipei. Tonight, we saw swimmers compete for medals in the men’s 50 fly, men’s 100 back, women’s 50 fly, men’s 100 breast, and women’s 200 back. For a full recap of the day 2 finals events, click here.
The Ukraine’s Andrii Govorov became the first man to break 23 seconds in the 50 fly in the history of the World University Games, giving the Ukranians their 2nd gold of the meet. They’re now second in terms of total golds, just 1 gold medal behind the USA, who got gold from Andrew Wilson (100 breast) and Justin Ress (100 back) today. In terms of total medals, the USA leads with 7, while the Ukraine, Russia, and Japan are tied for 2nd with 3 medals each.
Earning their first medals today were Australia (Sian Whittaker – 200 back gold), Germany (Aliena Schmidtke – 50 fly gold), Belarus (Ilya Shymanovich – 100 breast gold), Lithuania (Danas Rapsys – 100 back bronze), Kazakhstan (Dmitriy Balandin – 100 breast bronze), and Brazil (Henrique Martins – 50 fly bronze).
