Mallory Comerford will attempt to hold off the field in the 500, including top seed Sophie Cattermole and 3rd place finisher from last year Hannah Moore. It will be the first time in 4 years the 500 free will have a new ACC champion, since Leah Smith went 4-0 in the ACCs in the 500.

North Carolina freshman Caroline Hauder will look to back up her prelims performance by winning tonight. She holds a relatively small lead of .33 seconds over Rachel Bradford-Feldman from this morning, and will need to drop less than a second to get the NCAA ‘A’ cut. Freshmen Abby Richter and Julia Poole are the 3rd and 4th seeds going into tonight, and are both well under a second off Hauder’s time from prelims.

Caroline Baldwin and Caitlin Cooper finished just .02 seconds apart this morning, both breaking the ACC meet record that Baldwin set last year. They have a  somewhat comfortable lead over 3rd seed Laine Reed. Virginia has 4 swimmers in the ‘A’ final of the 50, where they will be looking to score a huge amount of points to establish themselves as the team leader after tonight.

The 200 free relay will see Louisville and Virginia battling at the top, as well as potentially UNC, NC State, and Florida State. Louisville is the top seed by almost half a second, but Virginia’s performances in the 50 free this morning have set them up to take time off their season best.

500 FREE

Mallory Comerford went her 2nd fastest time ever to win the 500 by a pretty comfortable margin. She had some very consistent middle 100 splitting 55.72 on the 3rd and 4th 100s. She was never really at risk of losing to a charging Sophie Cattermole at the end of the race. Cattermole shattered her previous best of 4:39.85, which she set this morning. She split a stunning 53.81 on the final 100 to out-touch Hannah Moore at the finish. Moore went her fastest time of the season by far, and her first time under 4:40 this year. Although Cattermole and Moore were off the NCAA ‘A’ cut, the invited time for last year was 4:41.84, leaving them safely under any reasonable change in the invited time.

Anna Jahns of NC State won the B final with a 4:43.71, and Zhada Fields of UNC won the C with a 4:45.38.

In an incredibly tight race, Duke’s Leah Goldman held off Rachael Bradford-Feldman and Julia Poole to touch the wall first by .07 seconds. Goldman went a quick 25.03 on the fly leg to have the 2nd fastest split in the field. Grace Oglesby was out in a stunning 24.40, but fell to 7th by the end. Poole outsplit the field on breaststroke 33.09. The field from this morning got shaken up a little bit, with the prelims winner Caroline Hauder coming in 6th with a 1:56.45. For reference, the invited time for the NCAAs last year was a 1:57.66.

Linsay Morrow of NC State won the B final with a 1:57.51, and Susanna Larochelle of UNC won the C with a 1:59.08.

Caitlin Cooper led the way for an impressive Virginia showing in the 50, and broke the meet record Caroline Baldwin set this morning. Her time of 21.54 was her fastest ever, coming in under her previous best of 21.73 which she swam this morning. That time was the 4th fastest in the NCAA going into this week. Virginia finished 1st, tied for 3rd Laine Reed), 6th (Morgan Hill), 8th (Dina Rommel), 12th (Anna Pang), and 19th (Eryn Eddy) in this event, scoring a whopping 125.5 points off this event. It took a 22.23 to be invited to the NCAA’s last year, signalling that Fanz and Reed should be safe to move on to the national championships this year.

Avery Braunecker of Louisville won the B final with a 22.33, while Elise Haan won the C with a 22.36.

200 FREE RELAY

Caitlin Cooper continues to be on fire today, as she came from behind to run down Louisville’s Casey Fanz on the final leg, splitting a 21.03 to mark the fastest split in the field by about half a second. Both Virginia and Louisville smashed their own school records. Virginia got faster as the relay progressed, with Morgan Hill leading off in 22.20, followed by Dina Rommel at 21.93, then Laine Reed at 21.51, and Cooper’s 21.03. Their final time of 1:26.67 not only was the fastest time in the NCAA going into this week, it shattered both the meet and ACC conference records. Caroline Baldwin had the fastest lead-off split at 21.77, which was the fastest split on UNC’s relay, which ended up in 4th, getting touched out by Notre Dame by .01 seconds.
