2018 Carifta Aquatic Championships To Begin On March 31

XXXIII (2018) Carifta Aquatics Championships

The 33rd edition of the Carifta Swimming Championships is set to splash off at 9:00 am (10:00 am EST)  on 31st March at the National Aquatic Centre in Kingston, Jamaica. The annual competition is the regional age-group championships for the Caribbean.  This year, over 335 swimmers, representing 21 countries have descended on an island, better known as the home of Bob Marley and Usain Bolt, to vie for aquatic supremacy.  Perennial powerhouses, The Bahamas and Guadeloupe, the two most recent champions, are once more expected to lead the fight for medals and to top the point standings.

Last year, host nation The Bahamas reclaimed top spot from Guadeloupe, 799.5 points to 662.  The other top 5 spots were filled by the Cayman Islands, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados. Jamaica, this year’s host, who placed sixth last year, must surely be hoping to climb higher in the standings.

Many Caribbean athletes attend school, train and compete regularly in North America.  Some of these athletes on show this weekend include The Bahamas’ Izaak Bastian (St. Andrew’s School, Boca Raton, FL and Florida State commit) and  Lilly Higgs (SwimMac and University of North Carolina commit), Barbados’ Luis Sebastian Weekes and Jack Kirby (The Baylor School) and Bermuda’s Canada-based Elan Daley.

The competition will take place in male and female 11-12, 13-14 and 15-17 age groups.  The age of the athlete at midnight on 31st December 2017, determines their competition age.
