On day 5 of the event, again nearly all races are free of scratches, only Erin Gallagher (RSA) won’t start in the 50m backstroke semifinal tonight. Her scratch opened up a spot in the first semifinal for her teammate Mariella Venter who finished 17th after prelims.
Erin Gallagher was clocked at 29,38 in the morning while Mariella Venter touched in 29,88.
Erin Gallagher made it into the 100m freestyle final tonight, she has qualified as the 7th fastest swimmer.
These are the events on day 5 in the evening:
Men 200m Backstroke Final 19:37
Women 800m Freestyle Final
Men 50m Freestyle S7 Final
Women 100m Breaststroke SB9 Final
Men 50m Freestyle Semifinals
Women 50m Backstroke Semifinals
Men 50m Breaststroke Final
Women 100m Breaststroke Final
Women 200m Butterfly Final
Women 100m Freestyle Final
Men 100m Butterfly Final
Disappointed.
Every reporter always asks C2 about living in C1’s shadows… but every year for the past 4 years C2 has had the better international results. She hasn’t lost to C1 in an international meet since 2014 Pan PACs
Proud could get into 21.1 – 21.2 territory.
What makes it even more amazing is that their funding is likely a small fraction of Australia, England and Canada.
They have heart.
Bronte showed in the 50m free she finally was hitting a season’s best. And since that was to be her last race before her rehab break she went with the no guts no glory approach and it worked. That turn at the 50m mark was ? So compared to Rio this wasn’t a choke by C1 it was more C2 executing the perfect race.
Big question is do they go with C1 still for the medley or do a last min swap?
On a side note I had the Campbell family and friends in front of me during the medal ceremony. One obvious happy family!
She had still been faster in SF and ? Trials, and had a 51.00 fly start relay split which roughly translate to a 51.7 swim … so about a full second slower than she has been this week
It was a choke by C1. Not as gigantic choke as Rio, but still a choke. It was clear she didn’t swim her own race. She went out tentatively in 25. When was the last time she went out that slow?
Sooooo…. who do you pick to anchor the medley relay tomorrow? C2 who won the individual medley relay by a big margin, or C1 who swam the fastest relay split ever in 51.00 earlier in the meet? It’s a pretty important quest considering Canada is likely to be 0.5-1.0 in the lead after backstroke and breast stroke legs and McKeom slowing after a heavy program while injured
A good dilemma to have, I guess.
I’m guessing they go with C2 – with respect to being fair. Besides, with Ruck on back, it’s either Oleksiak fly, Sanchez free or Smith fly Oleksiak free for Canada, which SHOULD be off of what AUS will field.
Peter, I think you’re forgetting Masse 🙂
I’m not sure I expect Canada to have that big a lead after back and breast though. Masse and Seebohm were all but level in the individual, and Smith just edged out Bohl too. With Oleksiak struggling (comparatively), I think Aus will have a lead going into the free, which should be enough.
Do Wales have a semi-decent freestyler? They could be worth a shout for the bronze IMO.
Sorry about forgetting about Masse!!! This crazy night got to my head
Wales have Kat Greenslade, who looks good for the future but hasn’t quite been on her game here.
Masse on back, Ruck on free
Have you forgotten about the world record holder and champion and commonwealth champion Kylie Masse?
Uh. Masse on back.
Cate Campbell should’ve learned the lesson from Sarah Sjostrom who set world record at 100 free by leading off 4×100 relay on the first day of the meet. Striking similarity: Sjostrom was also 0.6-0.7sec slower her pb on the last day of the meet in individual race under pressure to be faster than her fresh pb.
A question: where is the final’s live recap?
Did someone on the SwimSwam team sleep through their alarm?
Probably, LOL
