2018 C’Wealth Games: South Africa Makes A Move In The Medals

2018 COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Australia still leads the medal table in terms of overall count and number of gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Cate Campbell helped contribute to the gold column once again with a first place finish in the 50m freestyle, while the Aussie women’s 4x200m freestyle relay also stood atop the podium.

A sweep in the men’s SB8 100m breaststroke by Timothy Disken, Timothy Hodge and Blake Cochrane added another 3 medals to the green and gold total, bringing the Aussie total to 32 through 3 days of competition.

Adam Peaty captured gold in the 100m breaststroke for England, while Canadian women went 1 & 3 in the 100m backstroke with Kylie Masse and Taylor Ruck giving their nation an edge in the table.

Ruck also did her part in the 50m freestyle behind Campbell, giving silver to Canada, bringing its middle column to 5.

New Zealand earned its first gold courtesy of Sophie Pascoe and now totals 2 medals all together with the surprise bronze by 18-year-old Lewis Clareburt in the men’s 400m IM earlier in the meet

South Africa also got a healthy dose of gold on the night, with Chad Le Clos three-peating as champion of the men’s 200m butterfly and Tatjana Schoenmaker racing her way to history to beat out a stacked field in the women’s 200m breaststroke. Cameron van der Bugh was also on the podium with bronze in the 100m breast.

South Africa now frog-hopped Canada in the medal standings with 3 gold on the meet thus far. The nation is still a mile away from leaders Australia and England, but the squad is maximizing on the small talent pool it does have on-hand on the Gold Coast.
