2018 NCAA Division II Championships – Diving Qualifiers

2018 NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships

The prequalifying competition in men’s and women’s diving took place on Tuesday, March 13, deciding which divers will advance to the main draw in 1-meter and 3-meter diving at the 2018 NCAA Division II Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. Diving prelims begin on Wednesday with the Women’s 3-Meter board.

Diving

In the women’s competition, all returning All-Americans made it through the prequalifying round, including Christina Sather and Emma Kehn of Clarion, Mikayla Karasek of Grand Valley, Kelsey Vreeman of Colorado Mesa, Wayne State’s Mia Teifer, West Chester’s Nadia Muler, West Florida’s Mariah Constantakos, and Brooke Abrantes of UCSD.

UIndy’s Cassandra Kury had an excellent showing on both boards, qualifying among the top three with Sather and Karasek.

In team scoring projections, West Chester moved up a couple of spots to tie with Saint Leo at 10th, one spot ahead of UC San Diego.

In men’s diving, Ammar Hassan of Colorado Mesa outperformed the field on both boards, helping the Mavericks surpass Lindenwood, Florida Tech, and Saint Leo in team projections. Newcomer Otto Lehtonen of Oklahoma Baptist had a good showing, qualifying on both boards. Ditto for St. Cloud’s David Sufficool and Clarion’s Cary Johns.

Returning scorers from last year’s meet who qualified through include Cal Baptist’s Zachary Parry and Garret Chew, Sage D’Ambrosia and Noah Macomber of Colorado Mesa, Joseph Gucwa and Jared Gregory from Grand Valley, Joshua Zylstra and Payton Staman of UIndy, and Delta State’s Kyle Weesner. Weesner’s teammate William Ashwell, who scored 8 points last year, did not make it through to the main competition this year.

The updated top ten women’s teams from the psych sheet, which now includes distance freestyle events, diving, and relays, are as follows:

  3. Drury
  4. Oklahoma Baptist
  5. Fresno Pacific
  6. Lindenwood
  7. Tampa
  8. Cal Baptist
  9. Wingate
  10. Saint Leo / West Chester
