Badger Swim Club’s Emily Gjertsen will join the Duke Blue Devils next fall. She will be part of their class of 2024.

TOP TIMES

  • 200y free – 1:51.63
  • 500y free – 4:51.15
  • 1000y free – 9:56.00
  • 1650y free – 16:33.39
  • 400y IM – 4:25.15
  • 200m free – 2:06.20
  • 400m free – 4:18.44
  • 800m free – 8:47.97
  • 1500m free – 16:58.40

Gjertsen is primarily a distance freestyler, and she’s trending up — all of the times above are from the 2019 calendar year except for the 200y free time, which is from October 2018. A senior at Tuckahoe High School, she swam to a runner-up finish in the 500 free at the 2018 NYSPHSAA Champs, also touching ninth in the 200 free.

At the 2019 ACC Championships, Gjertsen’s time of 16:33.39 in the mile would’ve placed 13th, making her the highest Duke finisher ahead of Lucy Callard (who placed 13th in 16:34.20). She’s also just off of what it took to make the 500 free C final last year. Callard is a rising sophomore, and she’ll have two seasons of overlap with Gjertsen.

Gjertsen joins Aleyna OzkanCatherine Belyakov, Emily Lenihan, Sarah Foley, and Catherine Purnell in Duke’s class of 2024.

Since I realized no one’s said it… Hey Emily, great job, both in the pool and obviously the classroom. Keep it up. Duke — that’s a big deal. I’ll reframe my question, does anyone know if Doug is related to brilliant scholar-athlete Emily?

Best of luck, Emily. Anyone know if she is a member of the Gjertsen family formerly of Dunwoody, GA (a/k/a Doug)?

No known relationship with Doug. I’m sure there is some ancestral connection though.
