SCORING SYSTEM
Correctly picking a swimmer to place:
- 1st – 7 points
- 2nd – 5 points
- 3rd – 4 points
- 4th – 3 points
Correctly picking a swimmer to place in the top 4, but putting them in the wrong spot, will earn you 1 point.
Picks will close at 8am Pacfic Time on Wednesday, July 25th, and at that time, we will post everyone’s picks for them to see.
You CAN go in and edit your responses up until 6 PM on Tuesday. You can also use this “edit responses” ability to go in and print or save your answers.
The tie-breaker for prizes, if necessary, will be the most correctly-picked winners in the relevant time period, then 2nd-place finishers, then 3rd-place finishers, etc. in the relevant time period.

Can you pick the same person for 1st and 2nd place?
If you would like to, that would be one strategy to use. Nothing in the rules forbids it. People who have tried it in the past have not usually done very well.
What if say, Dean Farris, swims the 200 free and wins then gets up on the blocks and goes again finishing befor the next person? Does he get first and second? If so, I know how I’m using my four entries for the 100 and 200 free
Based on stats it’s in your best interest not to. Say there are two swimmers you know will come first and second, but you’re not sure which order (think Lochte/Phelps in an IM event).
If you pick the correct order, that’s 7+ 5 = 12 points, and 1 + 1 = 2 if you get it backwards. So assuming a 50% probability either wins (which is bogus in swimming) your expected value is 7 points.
If you put the same name for both 1st and 2nd, your max is 7 points, while your min is 5. So again assuming 50/50 your expected vale is 6 points.
Overall, I guess it’s safer, but statistically you are expected to score less… Read more »
SwimSwam people, would it be possible to change the rules so that people can edit picks in events where swimmers scratch after qualifying? For example, if Kalisz qualifies in 200 fly on the first day then scratches the rest of the meet, can we edit all Kalisz events?
BSD – while we would love to offer something like that, the amount of labor/development costs that it would take to manage something like that is not currently feasible for a free-to-enter contest.
Is Nationals the only qualifier for Worlds or does Pan Pacs count as well? If it is the only qualifier for Worlds, I don’t see many people scratching even if they’ve solidified a Pan Pac spot.
Nationals and PP count; top 1-2 in individual events (per time) go to worlds in the results combined from the two meets.
The most difficult pick’em contest. Does anybody know if Ella Eastin is swimming?
nice prizes!
