2018 W. NCAAs: Duncan First Ever Female EMU Swimmer to Qualify for A-Finals

2018 WOMEN’S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Eastern Michigan University’s Delaney Duncan became the first woman ever from her school to qualify for an individual A-final at an NCAA Championship Friday morning.

Duncan, a junior, is the 2-seed behind Indiana’s Lilly King after going 58.36 in prelims. Her previous best was 58.37 from the 2018 Mid-American Conference Championships last month, but that swim was her first drop in 2 years (she was 59.46 at the 2016 MAC Championships).

She’s also seeded 44th in the 200 breast Saturday with her school record of 2:11.13. In addition to the breaststroke events, she holds the EMU record in the 200IM — 2:01.04, but went 2:03.08 in prelims Thursday.

The school began its athletic program in the NAIA, and its men’s team won the NAIA title from 1968-1971. The school then transitioned to NCAA Division II, where the men’s team won a title in 1972. The team transitioned to DI in the mid-1970s.

EMU’s Head Coach Peter Linn is in his 29th season with the team.
