2018 W. NCAAs: Ella Eastin Shatters 200IM American Record

2018 WOMEN’S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Despite trailing Cal’s Kathleen Baker by over half a second after the breaststroke leg, Stanford’s Ella Eastin came back to win the 200 IM in American record fashion.

Eastin split 24.59/27.45/32.28/26.35 for a final time of 1:50.67, lowering her own American record by almost a full second.

Baker, who took second, split 24.23/27.33/32.09/27.60 en route to her 1:51.25, which was also under the previous American record.

Eastin was 1:24.32 at the 150-mark, while Baker was 1:23.65, meaning Eastin dominated the last 50. However, her free split was actually .11 off her previous record pace. In order to keep herself well under record pace, Eastin dropped her fly split by .22 and breast split by .18.

Why won’t they update the :26.24 Free split?

It was a great race between Baker and Eastin.

I think Ella had a little more endurance going for her, and that was the difference. Baker tightened up a little in the home stretch.

Love how she took that WC trials DQ in stride and has come back with so much fire this season

I get a Maya Dirado vibe from Eastin. She will be one of the golden girls of 2020 in Tokyo. Excited to see her the rest of this meet!

Congrats to Ella Eastin! Phenomenal swim. Both her and Kathleen’s splits were very solid throughout, especially Ella’s free split, but does anyone know how Bethany Galat’s breaststroke split (31.55) compares to best all time splits? It’s seems kinda ridiculous, considering Lilly King was only a 32.4.

Fastest breast split in recent history anyway…can’t find one faster at least through 2011. 31.55 is very quick.

I think Leverenz was 31.7 or something like that.

I can’t wait for Galat’s 200 breaststroke! She crushed her PB in the 200 IM and she probably has a lot more confidence after her silver medal from Worlds. I don’t think she has the speed to challenge King SCY but I could see her with a 2:04.

It doesn’t make sense the time drop only fly and breast doesn’t account for almost 1 second drop. Am I missing something?

She went 26.94 on the free leg in 2016

Ah, no wonder..So 26.24 free in 2016 isn’t correct. Make more sense. Her freestyle looked really goid..Thanks much.

Her breaststroke was also a 32.52 in 2016, not a 32.53
