The Stanford team of Janet Hu, Simone Manuel, Lauren Pitzer, and Ally Howe set an American record in prelims of the women’s 200 free relay this morning, and rebroke it, along with the NCAA record, in finals Thursday night.
Cal’s NCAA record from 2017 stood at 1:25.59 — the 2018 Stanford team split 21.65/20.89/21.62/21.27 to en route to their new record of 1:25.43.
With a lead going into the final 50, Ally Howe held off Cal anchor Abbey Weitzeil — who spit 9.94/11.07 (21.01) — with a huge underwater off her second wall. Howe split 10.23/11.04, out-touching Weitzeil by .07.
