Day 2 of Speedo Winter Juniors – East will feature the A, B, and C finals of the girls/boys 500 free, 200 IM, and 50 free, and the timed finals of the 4×100 medley relay.

Day 2

Girls’ 500 Freestyle

• Meet record: 4:37.82 12/9/2015  Hannah Cox, Upper Valley Aquatic Club

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Mary Smutny got out to an early lead and stayed the course to win the girls’ 500 free with 4:42.45. Smutny led by nearly a body length at the 200 and continued to increase her lead over the next 200 yards. Ellie Marquardt from Aquatic Team Of Mecklenburg moved past Lola Mull into second place at the 250 and held her position to the end. She turned on the jets over the final 100 yards and nearly caught Smutny, touching in 4:43.76 with a final 100 of 56.77.

It was a close finish for 3rd among Kelly Pash (4:44.78), Mull (4:44.86), and Rachel Klinker (4:44.91).

Boys’ 500 Freestyle

SwimMAC Carolina’s Jack Walker, who came in to the final with the top time out of morning heats, got off to a quick start. He led the field by a body length at the 200 with 1:40.80. Behind him, SwimAtlanta’s Jake Magahey and Gator Swim Club’s Julian Hill were even, and a good couple seconds ahead of the rest of the finalists. Over the final 200 yards, Magahey made his move. He cut Walker’s lead to half a body length at the 400. The pair began their bell lap on nearly even footing, and it was Magahey who pulled out the win. He brought it home in 24.45 to eke out a 4:14.61-to-4:15.02 win over Walker, only missing Jack LeVant’s meet record by 21/100.

Girls’ 200 Individual Medley

Kate Douglass of Chelsea Piers was the fastest out of the gate; at the fly-to-back wall she made her turn in 24.41, about half a second out front. It didn’t take long for Nashville Aquatic Club’s Alex Walsh, the defending champion, to assert herself on the field, though. Walsh split a 27.9 backstroke to outdo everyone by at least 1 second. She then went 32.78 on the breast to lead the field by 2 seconds. Walsh brought it home in 28.0 for a final time of 1:53.69, taking down her own meet record from last year.

Douglass maintained her place as runner-up but had to fight off a strong challenge from Laker Swim’s Isabel Ivey, who powered home in 27.26 to finish 3rd with 1:56.13. Douglass went 1:56.09.

Boys’ 200 Individual Medley

Cason Wilburn from East Coast Aquatic Club led the field after the 50 fly, cranking out a 22.43, but rest of the race is all Carson Foster. The 17-year-old from Mason Manta Rays opened with a 22.62, then proceeded to outsplit the competition with 25.7 on the back and 29.6 on the breast. Up by 2 body lengths at the 150 wall, with only his brother Jake Foster in pursuit, he brought it home in 24.58 to get the win in 1:42.54. With that, he erased Michael Andrew’s 1:42.77 from the record books, establishing a new meet record. Jake Foster finished 2nd with 1:44.57, while Zach Hils of Lexington Dolphins came in 3rd in 1:46.03.

Girls’ 50 Freestyle

3. Claire Curzan, TAC Titans, 22.06

Gretchen Walsh of Nashville Aquatic Club successfully defended her title in the 50 free (she won last year with 22.00). She touched in 21.82, her best time by 3/100. Runner-up Kate Douglass, who was second last year as well, broke 22 for the first time ever with her 22.87 in prelims. She finished just off that new lifetime best with 21.95 in finals. 14-year-old Claire Curzan took another 9/100 off the new PB she swam in prelims to secure third place in 22.06. Curzan dropped 8/10 this morning to go 22.15, the second-fastest 50 free of all-time for 13-14 girls. Her 22.06 still ranks 2nd behind NAG record-holder Gretchen Walsh (22.00).

Boys’ 50 Freestyle

3. David Curtiss, Hamilton Y Aquatic Club, 19.96

Coming into the meet only David Curtiss from Hamilton Y had broken 20 seconds; he was top seed with 19.75. In prelims, Matt Brownstead of State College Area led the way with 19.98, his first foray into the sub-20 world. Adam Chaney of Mason Manta Rays and Noah Henderson of Star Aquatics joined the club in finals, though. In a very tight race, Chaney got the touch with 19.87 over Henderson (19.90) and Curtiss (19.96). Kimani Gregory of Racer X Aquatics touched out Brownstead for 4th by 1/100, 20.01 to 20.02.

Girls’ 400 Medley Relay

Nashville Aquatic Club dominated the 400 medley relay to go 3-for-3 in relay wins so far at Winter Juniors East. Alex Walsh (53.25), Ella Nelson (1:01.31), Lauren Hunt (54.89), and Gretchen Walsh (46.78) combined for 3:36.23, taking .45 off their seed time. The TAC Titans quartet of Claire Curzan (53.01), Maria Baric (1:01.76), Charlotte Hook (53.11), and Brooke Zettel (50.59) earned the silver medal ahead of SwimMAC Carolina’s Maddy Flickinger (54.83), Emme Nelson (1:01.58), Ellie Vannote (53.29), and Elizabeth Sowards (49.87).

Boys’ 400 Medley Relay

Meet record: 3:13.37  12/10/2015  Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics (B Ho, J Babinet, J Molinari, A Gwo)

Mason Manta Rays’ Carson Foster (46.70), Jake Foster (52.96), Jacob McDonald (48.54), and Adam Chaney (42.91) took 1.57 seconds off their seed time to win the boys’ 4×100 medley relay with 3:11.11. The quartet came into the meet with a seed time of 3:13.68, already nearly 3 seconds faster than second-seeded SwimMAC Carolina and 3/10 off the meet record, a 3:13.37 set by Palo Alto Stanford in 2015. But the Foster brothers, McDonald, and Chaney took it one step further and crushed the 15-18 National Age Group Record in the event, too. The NAG had been established by Nation’s Capital Swim Club with 3:12.58 at NCSA Spring Championship in March of 2014.

Dynamo’s Ian Grum (47.99), Quinn Harron (56.37), Cam Auerbach (47.71), and Brooks Curry (44.62) came in second with 3:16.69. Michigan Lakeshore finished 3rd in 3:16.77 behind Joey Wachter (49.92), Khadin Soto (54.55), Riley Vanmeter (48.43), and Cam Peel (43.87).
