2019 Canadian Championships To Kick Off Thursday In Winnipeg

2019 Canadian Swimming Championships

The 2019 Canadian Swimming Championships will get underway on Thursday from the Pan Am Pool in Winnipeg, Manitoba, featuring many of Canada’s best.

Only four of the athletes who competed at the World Championships two weeks ago will be competing: Gabe MastromatteoCole PrattKelsey Wog, and Emma O’Croinin.

The 17-year-old Mastromatteo comes in as the top seed in the men’s 50 and 100 breaststroke, and sits fourth in the 200.

Pratt, 16, is entered in a staggering 13 individual events, not to mention four relays. He holds down the top seed in the men’s 200 back and 200 IM, the two events he raced in Gwangju, along with the 100 back. He’s also second in the 200 fly and 400 IM.

Wog was a finalist in the women’s 200 breast at Worlds and also earned a semi-final berth in the 200 IM. This week, competing in her home pool, the 20-year-old has four individual entries, none of which are her events from Gwangju. She’ll race the 50 and 100 breast, along with the 50 fly and 100 back.

O’Croinin, a 16-year-old out of Edmonton, is coming off winning a bronze medal at Worlds by virtue of swimming on the prelim relay of the women’s 4×200 free. She was also 12th in the 400 free and 17th in the mile. Here, she’ll take on four individual events, including the 200 free where she’s ranked second.

2016 Olympic medalist Kennedy Goss is the top seed in that 200 free, along with the 200 back, 400 free, and is second in the 100 back to Jade Hannah. The IU alum was a finalist in all four of those events at the World University Games in July.

Island Swimming’s Hannah holds seven entries, including the top seed in the 50 back in addition to the 100.

Other notable names in action include Eric Hedlin, who recently won a bronze medal at the World Championships in the men’s open water 5k, 2016 Olympic finalist Rachel Nicol, and 2018 Commonwealth Games finalists Mabel Zavaros and Eli Wall.

Another swimmer to watch out for is Summer McIntosh of Etibocke, who has been assaulting the 11-12 National Age Group Records over the past year. Still 12, McIntosh is entered in eight events, seven of which she holds the Canadian NAG. The only one she has yet to attain is the 200 freestyle, where she has been 2:04.85 and the record (from 1990) stands at 2:03.72.

With a busy FINA schedule this summer the meet is relatively small. With both WPS events yet to come better than 1 in 6 athletes are para swimmers.
