Class 4A Region Highlights
The Oviedo boys and girls, who won Region 1, all have relays seeded in the top 5 in the state psych sheets. On the boys’ side, Oviedo leads the 200 medley relay (1:35.22) and 200 free relay (1:26.20). In the 400 free relay, Oviedo is seeded 5th at 3:11.29, just 3 seconds behind top-seeded Lake Brantley (3:08.49).
For the Oviedo girls, their lone top-seeded relay is the 200 free relay (1:36.27). Regional foe Creekside sit on the top of the 200 medley relay at 1:44.54 and 400 free relay at 3:28.75. Oviedo sits directly behind Creekside in the 400 free relay with a sub-3:30 time of 3:29.28 while their medley relay is ranked 3rd (1:46.54).
Region 2 champion Emma Weyant of Riverview currently is the top 500 free seed in the state at 4:51.39. However, Weyant (2:00.52) is the #2 seed in the 200 IM by 0.11s behind Plant’s Ella Bathurst (2:00.41). However, last year Weyant won the 200 IM state final with a 1:58.09, nearly a second and a half ahead of Bathurst’s lifetime best (1:59.76).
Bathurst, however, has a strong seed in the 100 breast with her Region 2 lifetime best of 1:01.60. Not only is that a full second ahead of Region 3 champion Leah Gentry-Tuney of Freedom (1:02.91), but it is half a second behind Izzy Ivey‘s state record of 1:00.99. Bathurst is also scheduled to swim the medley relay with Plant (seeded 2nd), where she split 27.75 to aid their Region 2 victory (1:45.92).
Shifting to the girls’ sprint free events, Steinbrenner’s Lexie Mulvihill currently leads the 50 free (22.81) and 100 free (49.91) after sweeping at Region 2. Yet sitting just 0.06s behind Mulvihill in the 100 free is Region 1 champion Micayla Cronk of Flagler (49.97). Cronk is also the top seed in the 200 free with a 1:48.13, one second ahead of Riverview’s Savannah Barr (1:49.29).
Both Gentry-Tuney (50.83) and Barr (50.95) are seeded 3rd and 4th respectively in the 100 free behind Mulvihill and Cronk, setting up for an exciting race in Stuart.
On the boys’ side, Miami Palmetto sophomore Kyle Korvick is the state’s top seed in both the 200 free (1:39.74) and 100 free (45.61). While Korvick is the lone sub-1:40 swimmer in the 200 free, Jupiter junior Varis Monroe sits right behind Korvack in the 100 free with his Region 3 winning time of 45.99. Monroe is also seeded third in the 200 free at 1:41.04, behind Korvick and Palm Harbor’s Luke Williams (1:40.74).
Leading the boys’ 100 fly is Region 3 champ West Orange’s Jacob Kelly at 49.61. Right on his tail, however, is Windermere’s Reef Ide at 49.76, followed by two other sub-50 swimmers. Ide, however, is the top seed in his second individual, the 100 back (51.33).
Kelly’s second individual is in the 50 free (21.29), right behind Steinbrenner’s Max Martino (21.26) and top seed Olympia’s Touma Mack (21.07). Mack is also scheduled to swim the 100 free, where he sits in third behind Korvick and Monroe at 46.25.
I’m going to bet that a future UVA swimmer wins the women’s 200IM.
