CLASS 4A DISTRICT MEET HIGHLIGHTS

Last year’s class 3A powerhouse schools (Creekside, Bartram Trail, Nease, Venice) have all moved up to 4A this season and are looking to make an impact on last year’s 4A top schools (Buchholz, Oviedo, Plant, Riverview).

In Region 1, for example, both of Oviedo and Creekside’s 400 free relays are the top 2 seeds after districts. During the 2018 State Series, Oviedo was girls 4A state runner-up and the boys 4A state champion. Meanwhile, Creekside was the girls 3A state champion and and boys placed 3rd.

There have been a plethora of quick times after districts, including 18 All-America consideration times across the four regions. The lone automatic All-America time posted was from Flager junior and 2-time 4A state champ Micayla Cronk.

Cronk leads Region 1 in the 100 free with a 50.05, nearly half a second off her 2018 state title time of 49.43. Cronk also holds the top seed in the 200 free with a 1:49.19. She also won the 4A state title in the event with a 1:46.68.

Nease’s Olivia Peoples leads the Region 1 girls 100 fly with a 54.51, just a second ahead of last year’s state runner-up Abigail Gibbons of Oviedo (55.33). Peoples is also top seed in the 100 breast (1:02.94), ahead of 3A state finalist Madison Koutavas of Creekside (1:03.66). Peoples was the 2018 3A state champion in the 100 breast with a 1:03.36.

In Region 2, UVA commit and 2019 US National champion Emma Weyant leads both of her individuals for Riverview. Weyant is listed as top seed in the 200 IM (2:01.84) and 500 free (4:52.31), both All-American consideration times.

Plant junior Ella Bathurst is seeded second in the 200 IM behind Weyant at 2:04.04. Bathurst is also the top seed in the 100 breast at 1:03.01. As a sophomore, Bathurst was the 4A state champion by 3 seconds in the 100 breast, winning at 1:01.97.

Another Region 2 swimmer, Palm Harbor’s Luke Williams, holds 2 top seeds in the 200 free (1:42.20) and 500 free (4:31.72). Last year, Williams was a consolation finalist in the 200 free and just missed the top 16 in the 100 free.

Riverview’s Liam Custer, seeded second in the 500 free (4:32.56), is another 4A consolation finalist who will race next Williams. Riverview senior Alexander Gusev is also the top seed in both the 200 IM (1:52.55) and 100 fly (51.06).

Shaking things up in Region 3 is 2-time 3A state finalist Ide Reef of Windermere, who holds both top seeds in the 100 fly (50.70) and 100 back (53.58). Windermere also holds 4 other top seeds, including the boys 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.

A great battle to keep an eye on in Region 3 will be between 200 IM top 2 seeds Windermere freshman Hayley Clark (2:08.00) and Lake Nona sophomore Jordan Agliano (2:08.39). Last year, Agliano placed 8th in the 4A state final with a 2:05.84. Meanwhile, Clark’s lifetime best is 2:05.33 from December 2018. Agliano is also the top seed in the 100 fly (56.80) while Clark is seeded second in the 500 free (5;02.42) behind Forest Hill junior Anna Auld (5:02.01).

Cooper City’s Mallory Schleicher is the front-runner of Region 4’s middle distance free events. Schliecher holds the top seeds in both the 200 free (1:56.25) and 500 free (5:08.40), where she placed 10th at last year’s 4A state meet.

Also headlining the Region 4 girls 100 fly (56.48) and 100 back (58.56) is Ferguson junior Anelis Roque, who placed 10th in the 100 back at last year’s state meet.
