Women’s 1500 free

Thirty-year-old veteran Ashley Twichell led this one from the get-go, taking her race out in 1:02.30 and never looking back. She was 4:16.46 at the 400, 8:3716 at the 800, and 10:47.96 at the 1,000-mark, finishing in 16:11.19. Her best time, from July of this year, is 15:54.19.

NC State alum Hannah Moore, 23, took second place in 16:32.84. She was out in 1:03.68, then held very consistent 1:06-mids before bringing it home in a 1:05.04 (from the 300-mark to 1400-mark, her splits remained within a 0.45-second range). Moore was 4:23.10 at the 400 and 8:49.17 at the 800, finishing in 16:32.84. Her best time sits at 16:08.68 from June 2017.

Nineteen-year-old Kate Sanderson had a solid swim compared to her lifetime best, taking third in 16:39.68 while fluctuating between 1:06s and 1:07s. She was 4:26.23 at the 400 and 8:52.96 at the 800. She went her previous best time of 16:30.83  in July of last year.

Also of note in the first heat: 16-year-old Caroline Pennington took fifth in a new best time 16:55.06, 1.13 seconds faster than her previous best.

Men’s 1500 Free

There was no catching Zane Grothe in this race, as he finished first by nearly 22 seconds. Grothe was out in 57.59, then held 1:02-lows for the next 800 yards before dropping to 1:01s. He was 4:03.88 at the 400 and 8:12.99 at the 800 before finishing in 15:18.71. His best time is 14:48.40 from the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships.

Chris Wieser, a member of the 2019 U.S. Pan American Games team, took second in 15:.40.33. He was out in 58.76 before waffling between 1:02s and 1:03s the rest of the way (with a 1:01.83 thrown in at the 1100-mark). Wieser was 4:08.53 at the 400 and 8:21.98 at the 800. His lifetime best is 15:09.70 from 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials.

Christian Bayo, who represents Puerto Rico internationally, was just off his lifetime best, finishing third in 15:43.31. Hewas 4:09.98 at the 400 and 8:24.85 at the 800.

The first heat also featured our first look at True Sweetser since learning he is redshirting this NCAA season to train back home in Florida with Gregg Troy. He went 15:53.35, nearly a full minute off his sub-15 lifetime best. Sixteen-year-old Henry Morrisey dropped over seven seconds to hit a lifetime best of 15:53.43, breaking 16:00 for the first tie. Youngster Josh Parent, 14, also competed in the first heat, going 16:03.80.

16:03 for a 14-year old is awfully fast.

Well written up. I like how ms Hart called out their 400, 800, etc splits.

Oh yeah, and will done to all the swimmers who did crazy fast miles.
