Queens opened Thursday’s finals session with a 1:30.19 win in the 200 free relay. While they were faster than they’d been in the morning, the Royals fell .14 short of their own meet and NCAA Division II record, set last year. Junior Polina Lapshina led off with 22.34, exactly the same time she swam on Wednesday night while winning the 50 free. Senior Kyrie Dobson (22.53), sophomore Wanda Dollmayer (22.46), and senior Shelly Prayson (22.86) followed Lapshina.

Tampa (Elizaveta Bazarova, Megan Waddell, Hana Van Loock, and Molly O’Hara) came in second with 1:31.93.

Oklahoma Baptist, whose Victoria Fonville had the fastest leadoff split of 22.32, came in third. Sophomores Marizel Van Jaarsveld, Jamie Edwards, and Julie Day also contributed to OBU’s 1:32.14.

Drury freshman Tori Sopp paced the butterfly but when Hannah Kastigar of Northern State took over after the first 50 of backstroke, she never took her foot off the gas and ended up winning the 400 IM by half a body length, in 4:11.15. Kastigar was runner-up in the 200 IM on Wednesday. Second place went to Sopp, who maintained her position as the leader of the next wave of swimmers throughout the whole race. Her teammate Rebecca Cross came from behind to steal 3rd place from Queens’ Francesca Bains, coming home 1.6 seconds faster than Bains over the final 50.

Queens junior Polina Lapshina shot off the block like she meant business. She turned at the 50 wall in 24.09, followed by Drury junior Bailee Nunn in 24.47 and Queens junior Georgia DaCruz (24.52). Lapshina pulled further ahead on the 3rd 25 and came home in 28.07. Her final time of 52.16 took .17 off the 2017 meet and Division II record that had been set by Theresa Michalak from University of West Florida. Defending champion Nunn was runner-up in 53.05. Simon Fraser sophomore Kaleigh Sharkey came home in a blazing 28.17, only 10/100 slower than Lapshina’s final 50, to blast past DaCruz and take 3rd place in 53.39. DaCruz held on for 4th, going 53.46. Western State Colorado’s Randi Yarnell finished 5th in 54.19.

Barely dry from her 5th-place finish in the 100 fly final, Western State Colorado’s Yarnell surprised the field with a win in the 200 free. Yarnell upset the favorites, UCSD sophomore Ciara Franke and Queens senior Josephina Lorda with a wire-to-wire win from out in lane 2. Yarnell began with 24.88/26.92 to turn in 51.80 at the 100, giving herself about a half body-length advantage for the second half of the race. While she was outsplit on the 3rd and 4th 50s by Franke and Lorda, Yarnell nonetheless dug in and got her hand to the wall first. It was a tight finish with Yarell (1:47.28), Franke (1:47.53), Lorda (1:47.58), and Nova Southeastern sophomore Emma Sundstedt (1:47.90) coming in virtually together.

Yarnell surprised even herself with the win. “Oh god, I can’t believe it,” she said in her post-race interview. “I just dove in and [said], ‘I’m just gonna go! I’m just gonna go for it!’”

West Chester junior Nadia Mulder won the 1-meter diving title with a score of 467.75 points, nearly 40 more than in 2018 when she finished 7th. Clarion junior Emma Kehn and her teammate Christina Sather, the defending champion in this event, finished second and third with 455.05 and 447.30 points, respectively. Grand Valley junior Mikayla Karasek, runner-up in 2018, was fourth.

Queens downed the meet and NCAA Division II records in the 4×100 medley relay in a big way. The quartet of Lapshina, Prayson, DaCruz, and Dobson went 3:35.70 to lower the mark set by Wingate in 2016 by 2.1 seconds. Lapshina doubled up with an NCAA D2 and meet record in the 100 back with her leadoff of 52.07. Prayson followed with 1:00.47. DaCruz split 53.13 on the fly, then Prayson came home in 50.03.

Drury spent all 400 yards in second place with legs from Laura Pareja (53.93), Nunn (1:00.46), Sopp (54.76), and Yasmin Preusse (50.56). UC San Diego, who had been swimming in the third spot, was disqualified at the end of the race for a stroke violation. Wingate took third place, going 3:42.17 with swims from Anna Miram (54.63), Anne-Sofie Nissen (1:02.37), Maike Hoener (55.01), and Maria Madsen (50.16).
