MEN’S 200 YARD FREESTYLE RELAY – FINALS

• NCAA Record: 1:18.06 3/22/2012, Kenyon (Somers, Turk, Richardson, Ramsey)

1. Emory – 1:19.99
2. Tufts – 1:20.66
3. Kenyon – 1:20.73

Tufts had a body length lead on the field, thanks to Roger Gu, the 50 free champion from last night, leading off in 19.53, followed by Kinglsey Bowen’s 20.14. Kenyon’s Tommy Weiss brought the Lord’s back in the race thanks to his 19.88 split. As Lords senior AJ Reid attempted to run down Tufts, Emory’s Trey Kolleck catapulted to the lead, splitting a 19.47 to close out the win in a final time of 1:19.99.

Jumbo sophomore Julian Batt closed in a 20.47 to net Tufts the runner-up spot with their combined time of 1:20.66. The Lords settled for third in 1:20.67, narrowly holding off their conference rivals in Denison, who touched at 1:20.73.

Denison’s Mitch Williams was the quickest out in the butterfly, putting down the fastest split with a 51.43. Kenyon junior Mick Bartholomew, however, overtook the lead on the backstroke leg – and despite challenges from two charging freshman in fellow teammate Bryan Fitzgerald and Emory’s Zachary Lorson, Bartholomew secured the victory in a final time of 3:50.66. That win marks Kenyon’s 300th all-time individual national title.

Fitzgerald made it a Lords 1-2 with his runner-up time of 3:51.12. Following closely behind them was Lorson at 3:51.40, and Denison teammates Bebe Wang and Williams, who posted times of 3:51.46 and 3:51.70.

Denison’s Matthew Hedman and Emory’s Jason Hamilton tied for 6th at 3:53.07; Kenyon junior Colin Reardon finished 8th in 3:58.23.

MEN’S 100 YARD BUTTERFLY – FINALS

Kenyon sophomore David Fitch had a half body length lead on the rest of the field at the first 50, taking it out in a blistering 21.74. Sporting flip turns on every wall, Fitch comfortably touched first in a new NCAA Division III record time of 46.92. Edskes claimed the runner-up spot with his 47.47, while Fitch’s teammate in senior Jon Zimdars was the last man under 48 to take third in 47.86.

Claremont-Mudds-Scripps’s Marco Conati netted fourth in 48.10, while John’s Hopkins senior Brandon Fabian touched a hair behind in 48.13 for fifth.

Emory’s Hwamin Sim (48.25), Denison’s Kenny Fox (48.39), and Wash U.’s Andrew Pek (48.91) also earned top eight finishes.

Underclassmen went 1-2-3 in this race, lead by Denison’s Drake Horton – who lead from start to finish – winning time of 1:37.75. Finishing right behind him was John’s Hopkins freshman Noah Corbitt; his time of 1:37.81 cemented him as the last competitor under 1:38. Williams sophomore Jamie Lovette rounded out the top three, touching at 1:38.14.

Kenyon senior Robert Williams finished hard to clinch fourth with a 1:38.51 ahead of Washington & Lee’s Patrick Sullivan, whose 1:38.57 earned him fifth.

Also comprising the top eight was Denison’s Ryan Stevenson (1:38.76), Emory’s Kellen Stillman (1:39.09) and Calvin’s Julian Iturbe (1:39.17).

After taking third in this event last year, Lake Forest senior Heath Ogawa tallied a total of 537.65 points to cap off his senior year as an NCAA champion. Emory’s Lucas Bumgarner had an impressive freshman debut, claiming second with a final score of 515.75. Springfield’s Connor Pennington also scored over 500 points, taking the third place spot in 501.15.

MEN’S 400 YARD MEDLEY RELAY – FINALS

2. Denison – 3:14.29
3. Emory – 3:14.79

After breaking the NCAA Division III record in the 100 fly, Kenyon’s David Fitch lead the field with a scorching 47.19. Big Red senior Tiernan Foster-Smith gave Denison the lead with an impressive 53.29 split. Emory got back in the race with Hwamim Sim’s 47.95 fly leg, as five team touched virtually simultaneously going into the final 100.

Despite a charging Trey Kolleck, who split 43.00 (which was a tad off of his 42.67 from this morning), it was Wash U.’s team of Peyton Wilson (48.23), Kevin Van Cleave (54.05), Andrew Pek (47.82) and Chase Van Patten (44.07) who clutched out the win, hitting the pad in a final time of 3:14.17. The Bears marginally out-touched Denison, who took second at 3:14.29; and was closely pursued by Emory’s squad, whose combined time of 3:14.79 earned them third.

This marks Wash U.’s program first NCAA title in the 400 medley relay.
