Claire Curzan of TAC Titans and SwimAtlanta’s Jake Magahey were the undisputed winners of the girls’ and boys’ High Point Awards at 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Championships – East with 100 and 107 points, respectively.

Curzan, 15, went 5-for-5 to win all her individual events. She racked up nearly 20 more points than the next-highest finisher and did so in record-breaking fashion. Curzan won the 50 free by more than half a body length with 21.77, a new National Age Group record for 15-16 girls. She won the 100 free in 47.85. She was just a tick off her PB of 48.67 which she had swum earlier this year to break the NAG record for 13-14 girls. It was her second time under 48 seconds; she now ranks 4th all-time in the 15-16 age group behind only Gretchen Walsh, Olympic champion Simone Manuel, and Dagny Knutson. Curzan also won the 100 back by 1.2 seconds with 51.55 and the 100 fly by 1.2 seconds with 50.87. The latter time broke the meet record as well as the National Age Group record for 15-16 girls. It was her second sub-51 swim; she went a PB of 50.64 in March to break the 13-14 NAG record. Finally, Curzan won the 200 fly with 1:54.36.

17-year-old Tristen Ulett of Dynamo Swim Club scored 81 points for second place. She was runner-up to Curzan in the 100 back (52.76) and the 100 fly (52.01). She was also second in the 200 IM (1:56.54), fourth in the 100 free (49.13), and fourth in the 200 fly (1:55.88).

Third place went to Abby Arens, 17, of Marlins of Raleigh with 77 points. She won the 100 breast (59.82), 200 breast (2:09.49), and 200 IM (1:56.48) and placed 5th in the 400 IM (4:18.18) and 14th in the 50 free (23.31).

18-year-old Magahey won high point by a margin of 31 points with two gold medals, three silvers, and a bronze. He won the 500 free with a new meet record of 4:12.72 and the 1650 free with 14:51.76. Showing his incredible range, Magahey was runner-up in the 50 free (19.95), 100 free (43.12), and 400 IM (3:45.37). He also finished third in the 200 free (1:35.36).

Carmel Swim Club’s Wyatt Davis finished second in the high point standings with 76 points. He won the 200 free (by .01) with 1:34.58, the 100 back (45.80), and the 200 back (1:40.85). He was also third in the 200 IM (1:44.62).

Jack Aikins of SwimAtlanta placed third in the standings with 71 points. The 17-year-old won the 50 free (19.86) after winning a swim-off among five 6th-place finishers from prelims. He was also third in the 200 back (1:42.63), 7th in the 200 free (1:37.22) and 100 back (48.68), and 8th in the 100 free (44.88).

As a former medical professional, does anyone else notice that her upraised arm seems bruised? Any comments on that? Thank you. Also, in the paragraph about her times, it says “She was just a tick off her PB of 48.67”; shouldn’t that be 47.67 instead? Regardless, she is fast & still quite young. Congratulations Claire.

When I was swimming, I was constantly bruised from climbing in and out of the pool. As someone who is pale and bruises easily, it’s just a thing that happens. She also looks pale.
