2019 US Open Championships: Katie Ledecky Scratches 400 IM on Day Three

2019 U.S. OPEN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Friday Finals Heat Sheet

After winning the 400 free on Thursday, Katie Ledecky has chosen to opt out of the 400 IM on Friday after placing 10th in prelims. During prelims, Ledecky failed to make both A-finals in her swims, however she will still swim the 200 free B-final, where she placed 11th at 2:00.12.

Remaining notable scratches were focused towards selecting the stronger finals swim over another. Out of the 100 back A-final, #2 seed Phoebe Bacon scratched the 100 fly to focus on racing fellow 17-year-old Regan Smith. In the same way, #5 seed Olivia Smoliga scratched 200 free to focus on her discipline event.

Out of the men’s 100 fly A-final, Georgia commit Luca Urlando (200 free) and Dylan Carter (100 back) scratched both of their secondary swims to defend their 3rd and 4th respective seeds in the final.

Wins the works championship in the 800 after having the stomach flu, being dehydrated and having lost a lot of water weight.

It is a total waste for her to swim this event. What she really needs is to go back and work on her speed.

I wonder if some of this is based of a trials prep.

If you’re not top 8 in prelims for 400 IM you’re out. But for the 200 free you just need to make top 16, and get top 8 in finals.

Could be why caeleb dressel swam the 200IM b final too. Objective get into top 8 like it was trials.

Career starting trending downward when she left Bruce. Greg works for so many others but just not her. You hate to see it.

Sometimes swimmers cancel events to focus on their biggest event. For example, if I was doing a 200 IM and a 100 breast and my breaststroke was my best stroke, depending on the meet rules, I could scratch the 200 IM. In my current division, I can’t scratch any events voluntarily (I.e. only if you can’t get there in time for an event), but in this case with more experienced swimmers it is allowed.
