2020 CCSA Championships: Liberty Women Power Ahead of FGCU on Day 2

2020 CCSA SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2020 CCSA Championships continued on Thursday with the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, and 200 free relay. Incarnate Word freshman Ximena Conde narrowly missed her best time in the 500 free, winning the title in 4:52.91. Another freshman, Eva Suggs of Liberty, dropped over a second from her best and took silver with a 4:54.14. Incarnate Word had 2 on the podium, with Brenda Diaz taking the bronze in 4:54.90. She narrowly held off Liberty’s Emma Hazel (4:55.09) at the finish.

Liberty’s Mikayla Herich repeated as champion in the 200 IM. She dropped half a second off her best to win it in 1:59.34. She was seconds ahead, as Gardner-Webb’s Jessi Snover took silver in 2:01.68. That was Snover’s first best time in the event since 2018. FGCU’S Liz Zeiger took bronze in 2:01.77. That’s her fastest swim since 2015.

Hector Ruvalcaba Cruz repeated as champion for Incarnate Word in the men’s 200 IM. He was over a second faster than his winning time from 2019 as he dominated in 1:46.86. Gardner-Webb’s Chase Mattingly, who narrowly missed the podium last season, took the silver in 1:48.17. Mattingly took a second and a half off his former best.

Gardner-Webb’s Brady Fields out-touched teammate Zach Dingfield and Incarnate Word’s Christopher Lestage to win the 50 free, 20.02 to 20.13. Dingfield and Lestage tied for the silver. FAU freshman Rateb Hussein was just off the podium with his 20.28.

Additional Day 2 Winners

  • Incarnate Word’s Alvaro Ibarra dropped over 10 seconds in the 500 free. He won the final in 4:23.96 over 2019 champion Josh Fountain (4:27.78) of FAU.
  • FGCU’s Wiktoria Czarnecka won the 50 free in 22.40, out-touching Liberty’s Colleen Donlin (22.64).
  • Liberty dominated the women’s 200 free relay in 1:30.35. They got a 22.34 anchor from Donlin.
  • Gardner-Webb took the men’s 200 free relay in 1:20.11. They had a pair of rolling-start 19s from Dingfield (19.92) and Seggio Bernardina (19.91).
