Elite Swim Camps at Kenyon College

These unique camp experiences are designed for highly-trained sprinters, breaststrokers, butterfliers/backstrokers, or distance swimmers and offer the most race-specific training for each specialty that you will find anywhere in the country. The Elite Camps bring in nationally and internationally renowned coaches in each specialty to provide campers with the most cutting-edge instruction and training used by the worlds best swimmers today.  Enrollment is kept to a minimum to allow for better communication, more personal attention, and a greater appreciation of what it means to work together as a team.

The majority of swimmers who attend our Elite Camps are high school state qualifiers and even finalists. Our Elite Camps are designed for swimmers who are already excelling in a particular specialty, yet want to take their performance to the next level. Though the Elite Camps are open to any and all swimmers ages 13-18, they are most appropriate for swimmers with AAA times in their specialty or faster (based on USA Swimming’s National Age Group Motivational Time Standards). The campers who attend our Elite Camps chose the camp that focuses on their best stroke or specialty event. These camps are not designed for swimmers to work on their weakest stroke.

In the past 24 years, over 2,000 swimmers from 49 states and 11 countries have participated in our Elite Camp programs for what proves to be a transformative and inspirational learning and training experience.  A significant number of our elite campers have gone on to excel at the very highest levels of high school, YMCA, USA, NCAA and International competition, including 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist, Garret Weber-Gale!

JESSEN BOOK

Kenyon College – Head Men’s & Women’s Coach
2021 Headliner for Elite Distance

Coach Book is the Head Coach of the men’s and women’s swimming teams at Kenyon College.  At the conclusion of his first season coaching both the Lords and Ladies programs, Jess Book was voted the 2013 NCAA Men’s Coach of the Year and the 2013 NCAA Women’s Coach of the Year for their inspiring performances at Nationals. In doing so, he became the first Division III coach to earn both awards in the same season since the NCAA combined the men’s and women’s championship meets.  The NCAA team title was a first for Book, as a head coach, and was the record-setting 32nd for the Lords program.  The men’s team has continued to claim the first place podium at NCAAS in the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

On the women’s side, Book was hired as head coach of the Ladies beginning with the 2010-11 season. At the national level, he directed the Kenyon women to back-to-back fourth-place finishes in his first two seasons. In 2013, however, the Ladies took the NCAA by storm, setting over a dozen College records and claiming the runner-up spot in the team standings. Two Kenyon swimmers, a diver, and two relay teams claimed event titles during that 2013 championship meet.  At the end of the 2012-13 season, Book had three swimmers earn NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and two named to the Capital One Academic All-America Team. A total of 28 Kenyon male and female swimmers were named to CSCAA All-America teams. 2019 Coach Book was again voted NCAA Women’s Coach of the Year for their second place finish at the NCAA Championships.

Prior to taking the head coaching position at Kenyon, Book was the assistant men’s coach at The Ohio State University from 2008 to 2010. During his tenure with OSU, Book helped the Buckeyes improve from fifth place to first place at the Big Ten Championships and from twenty-first place to ninth place at NCAA Championship meet.

BRET LUNDGAARD

Princeton University – Head Women’s Swimming Coach
2021 Headliner for the Elite Breaststroke Camp

Bret Lundgaard enters into his fourth season as the Head Women’s Swimming Coach at Princeton University. Bret lead the Tigers to the 2020 Ivy League Championship and #22 in the country in the final NCAA poll.

In 2016, Coach Lundgaard was responsible for all training components for 2016 U.S. Olympian Molly Hannis, a four-year member of the US National Team who competed in Rio in the 200 breaststroke.

“Bret Lundgaard has been a huge influence on my swimming career,” Hannis said. “His ability to learn and evolve my breaststroke, and breaststroke in general, has rivaled some of the best coaches in the world. I will always be thankful for his contribution to my growth and success as both a person and as an athlete.”

Bret’s overall approach to coaching, as well as his extremely well-articulated definition of Education Through Athletics (ETA) has put him on the cutting edge in Total Performance of the individual. His track record of success both as a student-athlete and as a coach speaks for itself, but it was his passion for helping his student-athletes succeed athletically, academically and socially through an emphasis on both performance and values that sets him apart.

Coach Lundgaard, who is also currently a USA Swimming National Team Coach, was the Assistant Coach at the University of Tennessee before going to Princeton. Bret had a remarkable five-year impact at Tennessee on both the individual and team levels and was part of a 2013 Tennessee squad that placed third at the NCAA Championships, the best finish in program history.

Tennessee had multiple SEC champions and NCAA All-America honorees during Lundgaard’s five years on staff, and the Volunteers were fewer than 30 points away from their first SEC team title in 2016. He was the primary breaststroke and butterfly coach in Knoxville, and he helped Brad Craig and Peter John Stevens earn silver medals at top international events over the last three years, including an NCAA runner-up finish for Stevens in 2016.

Following a successful swim career at the University of Washington, where he was a two-year captain and 2008 Olympic Trials qualifier (100 butterfly), Lundgaard began his coaching career at both Boulder City High School and the Desert Storm Swim Team. One year later, he began his collegiate coaching career at the United States Military Academy, where he served as both assistant coach and director of recruiting. He brought in the program’s first Olympic Trials qualifier in more than a decade and helped the Black Knights break two dozen school records during his three years.

Lundgaard earned Pac-10 All-Academic honors all four years of his Washington career. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Journalism while also earning a Certificate of Business & Marketing. He earned a master’s degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sports Psychology and Motor Behavior from the University of Tennessee.

BILL DORENKOTT

The Ohio State University – Director of Swimming and Diving
2021 Headliner for the Elite Fly/Back Camp

Bill Dorenkott is the Director of Swimming and Diving at The Ohio State University (OSU). Bill started at OSU in 2008 as the Head Coach of Ohio State’s women’s swimming program. During his time in Columbus, Dorenkott has built the Buckeyes into a consistent contender vying for Big Ten Conference titles, racing for NCAA crowns, and sending its athletes to the Olympic Games and World Championships.

A proven winner who inspires that excellence in his swimmers, Dorenkott placed three Big Ten championships – 2002, 2005 and 2006 – on his resume during a 10-year stint as Penn State’s women’s coach; the Nittany Lions never finished lower than fourth at the women’s Big Ten championships during the Dorenkott decade (prior to his arrival, they had never finished higher than fourth). His Nittany Lion teams also finished in the Top 20 at the NCAA championships in three of his last five years in State College.

Dorenkott has coached 28 different student-athletes to 34 Big Ten individual championships, including 19 women to 31 Big Ten titles. During his final season of three coaching the Penn State men, he guided Pat Schirk to an NCAA championship in the men’s 200 backstroke. A total of 57 of his PSU swimmers qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials, and his student-athletes set 10 Big Ten records and four Big Ten championship records.

Dorenkott believes in the student- athlete. If his athletes take care of the first three priorities: 1) Be a great person; 2) Remember who you are, where you came from and understand that family is important; and 3) You are at Ohio State to get an education, and your degree will open doors for you a long time after you leave Ohio State.

Dorenkott has coached on four continents, and his student-athletes have competed in the Olympic Games, PanAm Games, World University Games, World Championships, Pan-Pacific Championships, U.S. National Championships and on the U.S. International circuit. He has been a member of the United States Swimming National Team coaching staff since 2001. He served on the U.S. National Team coaching staff during the 2001 World University Games, the 2003 PanAm Games and the 2007 Japan International Grand Prix.

Dorenkott was named a graduate assistant coach of the men’s and women’s swim team at Ashland University in 1991 immediately following graduation and was named head coach of both teams after just two seasons. In his first season at Ashland, he led the women’s team to a conference championship, and led the men to a fourth place showing. He turned the men’s team around the next season as they joined the women’s team as conference champions as the women repeated. In his two seasons as the Eagles’ mentor, the program produced 16 All-Americans in 49 events. Five Ashland swimmers were named Academic All-Americans in 1995, and 33 records were set under Dorenkott’s tutelage. His 1995 men’s team finished sixth at NCAAs after a 9-2 dual meet season, and the women placed 11th. While at Ashland, Dorenkott was the 1993-94 and 1994-95 Penn-Ohio Conference Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year and the 1994-95 Penn-Ohio Conference Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year.
