2020 U.S. OPEN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Today’s morning session is broken into a women’s flight and a men’s flight. The women’s flight should run from about 9 AM to 10:30 AM Eastern time, with the men’s session from 12:45 PM to 2:45 PM Eastern. We’ll run a second live recap for that men’s session.

 

MEN’S 1500 FREE – TIMED FINALS

  • American record: 14:39.48 – Connor Jaeger (2016)
  • U.S. Open record: 14:45.54 – Peter Vanderkaay (2008)
  • U.S. Olympic Trials cut: 15:44.89

Top 3:

  1. Michael Brinegar (Unattached) – 15:34.62
  2. Elijah Shoyat (CLPR) – 15:53.25
  3. Marcelo Acosta (CARD) – 16:07.97

Distance ace Michael Brinegar cruised to the win here, touching first by nearly 20 seconds with his time of 15:34.62. Brinegar was the only man under the OT cut. Elijah Shoyat was the only other man to get under 16:00, taking 2nd in 15:53.25. Louisville alum Marcelo Acosta took 3rd in 16:07.97.

MEN’S 200 BACK – TIMED FINALS

  • American record: 1:51.92 – Aaron Piersol (2009)
  • U.S. Open record: 1:53.08 – Aaron Piersol (2009)
  • U.S. Olympic Trials cut: 2:02.99

Top 3:

  1. Wyatt Davis (Un-Michigan) – 2:00.30
  2. Cade Oliver (FRST) – 2:00.81
  3. Cameron Tysoe (WA) – 2:01.43

Michigan’s Wyatt Davis was about two seconds of his personal best time of 1:58.18, as he won with a 2:00.30. But 17 year-old Cade Oliver had a big drop, lowering his lifetime best by over three seconds to take 2nd in 2:00.81, followed by Wisconsin postgrad Cameron Tysoe at 2:01.43. This was a relatively fast event, as the top 8 men all cleared the OT standard of 2:02.99.

MEN’S 100 FREE – TIMED FINALS

  • American record: 46.96 – Caeleb Dressel (2019)
  • U.S. Open record: 47.39 – Ryan Held (2019)
  • U.S. Olympic Trials cut: 50.49

Top 3:

  1. Andrej Barna (CARD) – 48.75
  2. Michael Eastman (UOFL) – 50.14
  3. Tomer Frankel (ISC) – 50.42

Louisville alum Andrej Barna hit a big new personal best, taking the win in 48.75 after coming in with a personal best of 49.52 from last summer. He was the only man to get under 50s, while Michael Eastman (50.14) and Tomer Frankel (50.42) both cleared the US OT standard of 50.49.

MEN’S 200 BREAST – TIMED FINALS

  • American record: 2:07.17 – Josh Prenot (2016)
  • U.S. Open record: 2:07.17 – Josh Prenot (2016)
  • U.S. Olympic Trials cut: 2:17.89

Top 3:

  1. Cody Miller (SAND) – 2:10.22
  2. Maxwell Reich (ISC) – 2:14.33
  3. Will Scholtz (LAK) – 2:18.85

Cody Miller swam his fastest time since last year’s U.S. Open, and a time that’s tied for his 7th-fastest swim ever, with his winning time of 2:10.22 this morning. Maxwell Reich was the only other man under the OT standard, taking 2nd in 2:14.33. 15 year-old Will Scholtz didn’t quite hit the OT cut, but he did knock over 3 seconds off of his previous lifetime best to take 3rd in 2:18.85.

MEN’S 200 FLY – TIMED FINALS

  • American record: 1:51.51 – Michael Phelps (2009)
  • U.S. Open record: 1:52.20 – Michael Phelps (2008)
  • U.S. Olympic Trials cut: 2:01:19
