The schedule for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials will follow the recently-confirmed schedule for the 2020 Olympic Games event-for-event, USA Swimming confirmed on Monday, with 2 notable exceptions:
- There are no relays at the Olympic Trials in Omaha (eliminating a lot of doubles and triples that swimmers might face in Tokyo), and
- In Omaha at the Olympic Trials, prelims will be at 10AM and finals will be at 6:45PM: basically a reverse of the schedule for the Olympics.
This means that the newly-inserted men’s 800 free and women’s 1500 free, which along with the mixed medley relay will be added to the 2020 Olympic schedule for the first time, will go in the same place in the Olympic Trials schedule as they will in the Olympic schedule: days 5 and 4, respectively.
USA Swimming had previously confirmed that they won’t use morning finals at the 2020 Olympic Trials, just as they didn’t before the 2008 Olympic Games that also saw morning finals. The Olympic Trials themselves are becoming a bigger-and-bigger television draw, and as such maintaining prime-time finals has become even more important.

Sets up an interesting choice for Farris with 200 free/100 back double. You have to pick the 200 free there right because of the possibility of making the relay? Or just do both?
Oh yeah, making the team in back wont be easy. a 5th or 6th place in the 200 makes more sense to gun for. Hope he does a LCM meet here soon, if he can rock a low 147 no taper he’s a shoe in
What? With that field? There’s not a single swimmer that I think is a “shoe in” in the 200 free. I honestly think he might have just as good of a chance at top 2 for 100 back as he will for top 6 in 200 free.
Looks like dressel will have no problem adding the 200 free! He’s got a low 1:46 in him at the very least. lets see Seli, Apple, Haas, Blake, farris, lochte(if he swims and doesn’t only focus on the IM), grothe, conger, is dwyer retired? Dressel might have a top 6 in there.
Question is if he even wants it – Having a chance to match Phelps is attractive, but Dressel’s races are probably going to be a lot closer than most of Phelps’s ‘08 races were. An extra day of rest may make quite a difference
How would he match phelps? He could only match Spitz I think, assuming he doesn’t doe the 200m free individually. Don’t have any illusions about Dressel needing rest. His ruthless performances at the 2019 worlds and the ISL meets has cleared any illusion that he is a mortal man. That 21.06/49.66/47.33 tripple was so fucking ridiculous.
To be Fair, It think Dressel needs to swim faster than a 1:46 low to make top 4, especially because I don’t think he will swim preliminaries at olympics. I think that 4* swimmers (other than Dressel) will go 1:45s at trials . So Dressel will need a 1:45.5 or better to swim the 4×200. He might just put up two fast swims… Read more »
I would like to see the EXACT same schedule. A night’s sleep between trials and finals is different than a nap.
I want to actually watch it live when I’m not at work.
USA TV (NBC ?) means that in Australia we will have to watch the Olympic finals while we are at work somehow , which should not be the case , when we are in a similar time zone toTokyo.
