The 14th edition of the China National Games is underway in Shaanxi, as the opening ceremony kicked off today, Wednesday, September 15th. Although aquatic athletes to the tune of Wang Shun and Zhang Yufei are participating in the formalities as flag bearer and torch relay participant, respectively, their swimming events do not begin until Sunday, September 19th.
Approximately 20,000 athletes from across 35 sports are expected to descend upon the host city for the prestigious quadrennial event, with the competition marking the first sporting event to be held in the nation with spectators since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Spectators will reportedly have to provide a negative COVID-19 test result certificate within 72 hours prior to entering any venues.
China is coming off of a successful 2020 Olympic Games, where the nation upped its gold medal count from 1 in Rio to 3 in Tokyo. Olympic champions this time around included the aforementioned Wang taking the men’s 200m IM while Zhang took the women’s 200m fly. The women’s 4x200m free relay also powered their to the top of the podium in world record-setting style.
Along with Wang and Zhang competing here in Shaanxi, Li Bingjie, Wang Jianjiahe, Xu Jiayu, Yan Zibei and Yang Junxuan are expected to race at these China National Games.
