2021 International Swimming League Match 2 – Day 2: Live Recap

2021 International Swimming League – Season 3, Match 2

Collaborative reporting with SwimSwam’s Reid Carlson and Nick Pecoraro.

Day 2 of Match 2 will feature 2020 MVP Caeleb Dressel of the Cali Condors swimming in some of his strongest events (100 free, 100 IM and 50 fly) but he won’t be the Condors’ entrant in the skins race. Both the women’s and men’s skins races will be backstroke, and the Condors have entered Coleman Stewart, who broke the American Record in the 100 back yesterday, and Justin Ress. The Condors lead by nearly 100 points after Day 1 and it looks like they will be hard to catch on Day 2.

The race for second place is still open, although the LA Current have built up a nearly 50 point lead over the Tokyo Frog Kings. The New York Breakers had several notable performances yesterday but lack the depth to keep up with the Current and the Frog Kings.

Standings at the end of Day 1:

  1. Cali Condors – 331
  2. LA Current – 238
  3. Tokyo Frog Kings – 189.5
  4. NY Breakers – 139.5

  • Lanes 3 & 4 – Cali Condors
  • Lanes 5 & 6 – LA Current
  • Lanes 7 & 8 – NY Breakers

Note that in the results below, JP means Jackpot and signifies a swimmer had their points stolen, and TS means Time Standard, meaning a swimmer failed to meet the minimum time standard in the race and thereby loses their points, though it is possible to both fall below the time standard and have points jackpotted.

  1. WEITZEIL, Abbey (LAC) – 51.66 (10 points)
  2. WILSON, Madison (LAC) – 51.75 (7 points)

LA Current solidified their second-place standing, pushing Tokyo Frog Kings further behind, with a 1-2 finish in the women’s 100 free. Abbey Weitzeil went 51.66 to claim victory over teammate Madison Wilson. Wilson closed in on Weitzeil over the final 25 meters but Weitzeil’s first 50 of 24.3 had given her enough room to win. Weitzeil said after the race that she knew Wilson was coming. “I’m a front-half swimmer; she’s a back-half swimmer.” Their strategy was ‘”I’ll pull you out, you pull me home.”

Cali Condors scored third with Erika Brown’s 52.48 but teammate Marie Pietruschka was jackpotted so both the Frog Kings and the Breakers outscored them.

Given the inimitable depth of the Cali Condors, the only surprise in the mixed medley relay was that the LA Current held on to keep the Condors from sweeping the top two spots in the final. Justin Ress led off for CAC’s winning relay in 50.12, markedly faster than his runner-up finish (50.41) in the individual event. He handed off in first place to Molly Hannis, who split 1:04.57 on the breast. Hannis was one of only two women swimming breaststroke, and by the time Caeleb Dressel began his butterfly leg, the Condors were in fifth place. Dressel split 48.98 in a field that included five women and three men. He pulled the Condors back to the lead and Erika Brown began her freestyle anchor with a two body-length lead. She and LA Current’s Abbey Weitzeil both had to hold off a fast-charging Jesse Puts from Cali Condors’ other relay, which they did. Brown split 52.50, Weitzeil went 51.18, and Puts swam 46.83.

Abbie Wood gave NY Breakers another win, racking up 21 big points for her team, out of 53 points awarded for this event. The 200 IM champion won the 400 IM by 4.9 seconds, beating double Olympic champion Yui Ohashi of Tokyo Frog Kings for the second time in as many days. Wood led from start to finish, beginning with a half-second lead after the 100 fly (1:02.44). She maintained her lead through the backstroke, even though she was outsplit by Ohashi, 1:08.8 to 1:09.2. Wood built her lead on the breaststroke leg (she was third in the 200 breast yesterday), pulling to a four-second lead over Ohashi heading into the freestyle. Wood was home in 1:03.0 for a 4:29.88 final time.

Because she led at the 200 meter checkpoint, Wood earned 6 extra points (the top five at the 200 mark in the 400 IM score 6-4-3-2-1). She also jackpotted the 6th, 7th, and 8th place finishers, including her teammate Ana Catarina Monteiro.

It was Wood’s second career 400 IM win. Ohashi has five 400 IM titles under her belt.

Daiya Seto made it four-for-four in Match 2, running away with the 400 IM title for the second time in his ISL career. The Tokyo Frog Kings star has now won the 200 breast, 200 IM, 200 fly, and 400 IM this weekend. He was particularly dominant in this event, jumping out to a two body-length lead from the 100 fly. He led by 2.7 seconds at the 200 checkpoint, earning a 6-point bonus. He increased his lead to over 6.5 seconds after the breaststroke before giving some of that back on the freestyle. Nevertheless, with his jackpot points, Seto added 24 team points for the Frog Kings.

Brendon Smith of NY Breakers was the only one remotely near Seto. He moved into second place during the backstroke and never gave up his position. His teammate Brandonn Almeida touched out Cali’s Mark Szaranek for third place, 4:08.77 to 4:08.83. Brodie Williams of the Condors outscored them both, even though he finished fifth, because he earned bonus points for being in third place at the 200 checkpoint.

In a reprise of Saturday’s 50 back final, Sherridon Dressel of Cali Condors used a strong underwater and second 25 to win the first round of the 50 back skins race. Dressel was .08 faster than she had been in the individual final and came to the wall just ahead of teammate Beata Nelson, 26.59 to 26.64. Alicja Tchorz of NY Breakers came in third, assuring her spot in the next round. Tchorz was runner-up to Dressel in yesterday’s 50 free final by .02. LA Current’s Kathleen Baker took the fourth spot in round 2, edging teammate Helena Gasson, 26.84 to 26.88.

The second round was all Nelson. She blasted a 26.33, faster than her first round and .34 faster than Dressel’s winning time in yesterday’s individual final. Dressel touched out Tchorz by .01 to advance to the third round.

Nelson’s third swim in nine minutes was a 26.67, giving her a 1-second margin over teammate Dressel who finished with 27.70.

This was a major point-earner for the already point-rich Condors, as Nelson and Dressel scored 1-2 in all three rounds.

  1. Cali Condors – 644

McKeon and Chalmers will miss the first match but be there for the rest of the season.

After all, Dressel’s goal for this year’s ISL seems to be to steal the jackpot from Chessirak.

If you come in last in the race, Olmec takes away 1/2 pendant from your total and you have to cross the moat again.

I’m pretty sure Sherridon Dressel just silenced the cries of nepotism from posters here. She walks away from this meet with two event wins and a 2nd place Skins finish. She’s proving to be a fantastic swimmer in her own right. If she keeps improving at this rate, there might be two Dressels on Team USA in Paris.

Yes I remember her pick being criticised on here. I’m very happy for her.

According to Rowdy, David Marsh is complaining about other teams being tapered already?

Yeah I would like to know more about this.

I totally did not understand this complaint. Everyone can have their own strategy so Marsh really just comes off as being jealous

yeah and during the post meet press conference, apparently cali did not expect the dominance and a lot of the people were ‘out of shape’.

Is Marsh coaching this season in Naples?

If Cali isn’t aggregate first in the men’s medley relay, I guess we’re going to see more breaststroke skins in the future

I think we will. But I also think Cali are so far ahead – at least during regular season – that I think most teams will be fighting for 2nd.

For instance, ENS are most likely to beat Cali in medley relay but I think they’re more likely to choose back (if an option) than great as at the moment I don’t think they can beat Cali and will want to guarantee second

How do Jackpot Points work?

Cali get lots of them. Other teams tend to get a few

More seriously, first table on this page has the jackpot deltas. Given they’re worth so much they really do need to reference them more in the production (or my personal preference is get rid completely- arguably it adds something at the top end but it undermines the battle behind the leaders and doesn’t help with the draft making things more competitive)
