2021 Japanese Olympic Trials Day 1: Roster For Tokyo Grows By 3

2021 JAPAN SWIM (OLYMPIC TRIALS)

Day 1 of the 2021 Japan Swim, the nation’s sole Olympic-qualifying opportunity, saw 3 additional names added to the lineup for a home-based Games.

Joining officially pre-qualified world champion Daiya Seto in the men’s 400m IM was Yuki Ikari. Ikari clinched his bid tonight in a lifetime best of 4:11.88 to snag silver as well as check-in as the 4th fastest swimmer in the world this season. If Ikari’s name looks familiar, it’s because the 20-year-old was the 2019 Summer Universiade (World University Games) champion in this event.

National record holder Yui Ohashi topped the women’s 400m IM to join the Olympic party, while right behind her was breakout star Ageha Tanigawa. At just 18 years of age, Tanigawa threw down the swim of her life, hitting 4:37.90 to add her name to the unofficial Olympic roster.

Among other events, day 2 will see the conclusion of the men’s 100m breast and women’s 100m fly, whose semifinals we saw in this evening’s session. Shoma Sato leads the former event in a new career-quickest of 59.18 while Suzuka Hasegawa will be in lane 4 of the latter with her semifinal effort of 58.30.

Of note, leukemia survivor Rikako Ikee will also be in that women’s 1fly final, with the inspirational 20-year-old reaching the 3rd seed in 58.48.

Unofficial Japanese Olympic Roster:

Yuki Ikari – men’s 400m IM

Yui Ohashi – women’s 400m IM

Daiya Setomen’s 200m IM/400m IM (officially pre-qualified)

Ageha Tanigawa – women’s 400m IM
