Night 2 of the Ohio State Invite saw breaststrokers Hannah Bach and Cooper Van Der Laan post NCAA A-cuts in the 100 breast, as well as a major 100 backstroke showdown between Olympic gold medalist Hunter Armstrong and Gabriel Fantoni.

Women’s 200 Medley Relay 

1.  Ohio State – 1:35.28
2. Indiana – 1:37.06
3. UCLA – 1:38.57

Ohio State’s women pulled away with the victory here, as Emily Crane, Hannah Bach, Katherine Zenick and Amy Fulmer posted an NCAA A cut time of 1:35.28. The team earned a major boost from Zenick, who split 22.81 on the butterfly leg.

Men’s 200 Medley Relay 

1.  Ohio State – 1:24.24
2. Indiana – 1:24.32
3. Indiana – 1:24.57 

In a tight finish, Ohio State emerged victorious as the relay of Hunter Armstrong, Hudson McDaniel, Alex Quach and Ruslan Gaziev recorded a final NCAA B cut time of 1:24.24. Indiana managed to pick up second and third place finishes, with the team’s B-relay nearly beating the A-relay. 

Women’s 400 IM 

1.  Gillian Davey (Kentucky) – 4:06.34 
2. Bailey Bonnett (Kentucky) – 4:06.96
3. Mac Looze (Indiana) – 4:08.58 

Kentucky posted the top two finishes here, as Gillian Davey out-touched teammate Bailey Bonnett with times of 4:06.34 and 4:06.96, respectively. Both swimmers recorded NCAA B-cuts with their performances. 

Indiana’s Mac Looze also got under the cut, finishing just under 2 seconds behind the leaders in 4:08.58. 

Men’s 400 IM 

1. Mikey Calvillo (Indiana) –  3:46.23
2. Tristan Dewitt (Indiana) – 3:46.32 
3. Cales Coll Marti (Virginia Tech) – 3:46.47

In a very close finish that saw the three leaders touch within .2 of each other, Indiana’s Mikey Calvillo got his hand to the wall .09 ahead of teammate Tristan Dewitt, with times of 3:46.23 and 3:46.32, respectively. Virginia Tech’s Cales Coll Marti came in right behind the pair, posting a time of 3:46.47.

Women’s 100 Fly 

1. Katherine Zenick (Ohio State) – 51.65 
2. Coleen Gillian (Notre Dame) – 52.04
3. Sydney Hartington (Navy) – 52.51 

After tying for the top qualifying spot this morning, Katherine Zenick was in a league of her own, winning the 100 butterfly by almost .4 over Notre Dame’s Coleen Gillian. Navy saw its first podium finish of the night as Sydney Harrington placed third with a time of 52.51. 

Men’s 100 Fly 

1.  Youssef Ramadan (Virginia Tech) – 45.10
2. Gabriel Fantoni (Indiana) – 45.91
3. Antani Ivanov (Virginia Tech) – 46.04

Despite being slightly off of his 44.64 from prelims, Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan still easily topped the field here, winning with a time of 45.10. Indiana’s Gabriel Fantoni had a strong swim for second, nearly bettering his best time with his final time of 45.91. Fantoni, the reigning Big 10 Champion in the 100 backstroke, may be one of the early favorites for the 100 butterfly title this season.

Women’s 200 Free 

1.  Riley Gaines (Kentucky) – 1:43.81
2. Anna Peplowski (Indiana) – 1:44.34
3. Ella Ristic (Indiana) – 1:44.77

Riley Gaines saw a late surge to give the Kentucky swimmer her first individual victory of the competition. With her performance, Gaines finished just a second off of her best time, which stands at 1:42.70 from the 2021 SEC Championships. Anna Peplowski saw another personal best to take second, after cutting 3 seconds off of her lifetime best during prelims. 

Men’s 200 Free 

1.  Rafael Miroslaw (Indiana) – 1:33.00 
2. Brendan Burns (Indiana) – 1:33.04
3. Ruslan Gaziev (Ohio State) – 1:33.20

In a close finish, Indiana’s Rafael Miroslaw took the top spot in the men’s 200 free, out-touching teammate Brendan Burns by .04 for the victory. Ruslan Gaziev was not far behind, as he touched a tenth later in a time of 1:33.20 for third. 

Women’s 100 Breast 

1.  Hannah Bach (Ohio State) – 58.08
2. Brearna Crawford (Indiana) – 59.32 
3. Noelle Pelowski (Indiana) – 59.84 

Ohio State’s Hannah Bach picked up an NCAA A-cut here, posting a time of 58.08 to win the 100 breaststroke. Indiana’s breaststroke prowess showed as teammates Brearna Crawford and Noelle Pelowski touched 2nd and 3rd, both picking up NCAA B-cuts. 

Men’s 100 Breast  

1. Cooper Van Der Laan (Pittsburgh) – 51.47
2. Josh Bottelberghe (Notre Dame) -51.88
3. Josh Matheny (Indiana) – 52.24 

Coming in just off of his prelims time, Cooper Van Der Lan touched in 51.47 to win the 100 breaststroke by almost a half second. Van Der Lan was under the NCAA A-cut with his effort, picking up his team’s first victory of the meet. Josh Bottelberghe and Josh Matheny battled for second, with Bottelberghe touching the wall first in a time of 51.88. 

Women’s 100 Back 

1. Caitlin Brooks (Kentucky) -51.93
2. Emily Crane (Ohio State) – 51.94 
3. Madelyn Christman (Notre Dame) -52.74

Kentucky’s Caitlin Brooks managed to get her hand to the wall first, touching in a time of 51.93 to better Ohio State’s Emily Crane by .01. Notre Dame’s Madelyn Christman came in third with a time of 52.74. 

Men’s 100 Back

1. Gabriel Fantoni (Indiana) – 45.20
2. Hunter Armstrong (Ohio State) – 45.82
3. Jacob Steele (Indiana) -46.02 

Indiana’s Fantoni continued his strong meet with a victory over Olympic gold medalist Hunter Armstrong, touching with times of 45.20 and 45.82, respectively. Fantoni was almost a half second faster tonight than he was in the prelims session this morning. Indiana also got Jason Steele on the podium via his third place finish.

Women’s 1 Meter Diving

1.   Kyndal Knight (Kentucky) – 315.75
2. Anne Fowler (Indiana) – 306.20 
3. Kelly Straub (Notre Dame) – 299.65  

Kentucky’s Kyndal Knight got the job done on the diving boards, earning the victory with a score of 315.75. Indiana’s Anne Fowler followed closely behind, scoring 306.20 points to take second. 

Men’s 3 Meter Diving 

1.  Andrew Capobianco (Indiana) – 428.55
2. Ming Zhang (Kentucky) – 417.80
3. Carson Tyler (Indiana) – 407.20 

Indiana saw two divers make the podium, as Andrew Capobianco placed first with a score of 428.55 and Carson Tyler came in third with a total of 407.20 points. Kentucky’s Ming Zhang placed second to give the men’s team a boost in the scoring. 

Women’s 800 Freestyle Relay 

1.  Kentucky – 7:03.45
2. Indiana – 7:03.73
3. Ohio State – 7:11.04 

The Kentucky team of Izzy Gati (1:46.24), Gaines (1:44.06), Sophie Sorenson (1:46.77), and Wheeler (1:46.38)  managed to hold off a charging Indiana team to take the victory here, largely due to a 1:44.06 split from Gaines on the second leg, which was the fastest split in the field by a second. Both teams out-paced 3rd-placed Ohio State by almost 7 seconds. 

Men’s 800 Freestyle Relay 

1.  Indiana – 6:17.27
2. Ohio State – 6:23.31
3. Kentucky- 6:23.45 

The same three teams topped the podium as in the women’s race, with Indiana easily winning in a time of 6:17.27. The team of Brendan Burns, Van Mathias, Rafael Miroslaw, and Jack Franzman topped the meet record with their effort, taking down the other teams by over 6 seconds. Ohio State narrowly beat Kentucky to take second by .14.
