Iron makes a statement with a 1-2 finish by Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Barbor Seemanova for 16 points. The Aqua Centurions–the Match 10 favorites–place just 3rd and 8th for 7 points, while Tokyo and the New York Breakers punctuate one another placing 4th/6th and 5th/7th, respectively. This is the momentum Iron will need if they are to upset the Aqua Centurions for the match win.

The Aqua Centurions answer back with a 1-2 finish of their own led by Alessandro Miressi and Thomas Ceccon who touch in 46.31 and 46.62, respectively. Iron take a hit and only finishes 7th and 8th, while Tokyo gets a solid 4th/5th finish. The New York Breakers get a 3rd-place finish from Stan Pijnenburg and can finally get some momentum.

Svetlana Chimrova delivers for the New York Breakers with a win and jackpot in the women’s 200 butterfly. Iron gets solid points on the board as well finishing 2nd and 3rd, while the Aqua Centurions and Tokyo take minor hits and will only come away with 5 points and 4 points, respectively.

Chimrova wasn’t necessarily the favorite to win, that was more likely Alys Thomas of Iron, however, Chimrova produced a 31.99 on the final 50 to move from 2nd to 1st and slip past Thomas for the win.

Daiya Seto claimed the victory in the men’s 200 fly, an outcome we had predicted, though Leonardo de Deus of the Aqua Centurions made it close with an excellent back half. Matt Temple from the New York Breakers was the early leader turning first at both the 50- and 100-meter marks, though he faded to 7th and was ultimately jackpotted by Seto. Temple, as well as Iron’s Mikhail Vekovishchev and Tokyo’s Maarten Brzoskowski were all jackpotted, resulting in a 15-point haul for Seto. Iron will come away with 5 point to Tokyo’s 15 points, and the Aqua Centurions will emerge with 11 points, keeping them solidly in the hunt for the match victory.

New York’s Paulina Peda grabs a victory and jackpot in the 100 backstroke, just holding off Iron’s Ingeborg Loyning to finish in 57.40 to Loyning’s 57.42. Tokyo nabs a solid 3rd- and 4th-place finish from sisters Catie DeLoof and Gabby DeLoof, netting the Frog Kings 11 points. The Aqua Centurions earn 4 points as well as a 1-point deduction for Fantine Lesaffre failing to make the minimum time standard. Iron’s Africa Zamorano, meanwhile, was disqualified thereby losing taking 2 points away from Iron and dampening Loyning’s 2nd-place finish.

Robert Glinta and Lorenzo Mora place 1-3 for Iron in the men’s 100 backstroke, netting Iron a huge 22 points. The Breakers falter here as both of their swimmers fall victim to Glinta’s jackpot, while 200 fly runner-up Leonardo de Deus of the Aqua Centurions is deducted 1 point for missing the minimum time standard. Tokyo did well to emerge from the race with 9 total points while Aqua will only receive 6 points and New York zero.

Alicja Tchorz gets it done in the women’s 100 IM, delivering a 58.43 to win the event for the Breakers. Iron’s Costanzan Cocconcelli nearly chased her down but placed 2nd in 58.43. New York’s Abbie Wood, who is much stronger in the 200 and 400 IM, places 5th for 4 points earning New York a total of 14 points in the event.

Iron’s Marco Orsi takes the win and 9 points in the men’s 100 IM, getting to the wall ahead of the early leader Thomas Ceccon from the Aqua Centurions. Iron’s other swimmer, Leonardo Santos, places 2nd to haul in a total of 14 points for Iron.

Arianna Castiglioni and Martina Carraro deliver a 1-2 finish for the Aqua Centurions in the women’s 100 breaststroke, and Tokyo’s Miranda Tucker and Kanako Watanabe place 3rd and 4th netting the Frog Kings a total of 11 points. Castiglioni jackpots Iron’s Jenna Strauch and earns 10 points, putting Aqua’s event total at 17 points.

Though Tokyo’s Yasuhiro Koseki had the early lead it was Aqua’s Arno Kamminga who got the win in 56.46. Aqua’s Nicolo Martinenghi placed 3rd while Tokyo’s Alessandro Pinzuti finished 3rd. Kamminga jackpots both Marco Koch and James Wilby of the New York Breakers to earn 12 points, putting Aqua’s event total at 18 points. Because Wilby failed to meet the minimum time standard New York is deducted a point.

In what might be a preview of the women’s 50 skins later, Aqua’s Holly Barratt blasts a 25.28 to win the women’s 50 butterfly, barely out-touching Iron’s Ranomi Kromowidjojo by 0.02. Iron’s Melanie Henique places 2nd to give Iron a total of 13 points versus Aqua’s 16 points. Tokyo will only come away with 4 points and the New York Breakers 5 points.

Iron’s Nicholas Santos scared both the ISL Record and the World Record in the men’s 50 butterfly, producing a 21.83 to win the race and jackpot 5 other swimmers, coming away with a total of 24 points. The Aqua Centurions placed 2nd and 3rd to net them a total of 13 points, meanwhile Tokyo and New York earn zero points in this event. Santos’ swim registers as the 6th-fastest performance all-time in the 50 butterfly. Only Santos himself and German Steffen Deibler have been faster–Deibler never swam the race in the ISL but was the World Record holder from 2009 to 2018 when Santos broke it at a FINA World Cup meet in Budapest.

Iron’s Barbora Seemanova led the entire way in the women’s 200 freestyle, fending off a late charge from Aqua’s Federica Pellegrini. Tokyo is completely shut out of the top-4 and places 5th and 6th for a total of 7 points. The New York Breakers earn 8 points in this race versus Iron’s 14 points and Aqua’s 8 points.

Joe Litchfield of the New York Breakers stormed home in a 25.93 in the men’s 200 freestyle to get the win by a mere 0.07 over Iron’s Matt Richards. Richards also had a solid final 50 with a 26.39, and both Litchfield and Richards, as well as Aqua’s Matteo Ciampi, overtook Iron’s Luiz Altamir Melo who had led for the first 150 meters. New York’s Brendon Smith, however, places 8th meaning the Breakers come away with 10 points versus 12 for Iron. The Aqua Centurions will earn 8 points and Tokyo just 6 points.

The Aqua Centurions dominated the mixed medley relay with 1st- and 3rd-place finishes. Iron also did well to place 2nd and 4th, though Aqua will come away with 32 points to Iron’s 24 points. The New York Breakers really struggled here and only come away with 2 points–the Breakers placed 7th and 8th, however, their second relay failed to meet the minimum time standard, resulting in a 2-point deduction. Even so, Jakub Majerski produced a 49.28 butterfly split on New York’s “B” relay, however, Tes Schouten only managed a 1:08.39 on the breaststroke, dooming the team.

Tokyo’s Yui Ohashi uncharacteristically lost the lead on the backstroke during the women’s 400 IM, but her breaststroke and freestyle splits more than made up for it, earning her the win. Tokyo’s Paige Madden hit the 200-meter checkpoint first to earn an additional 6 points while Ohashi would turn 2nd at 200 meters, earning an additional 4 points. New York’s Abbie Wood earned 3 points at the 200-meter turn and placed 2nd overall in the race to earn a total of 10 points. Tokyo was the big winner in this race though as the Frog Kings come away with 29 points. The Aqua Centurions, meanwhile, earn zero points as both swimmers fall victim to Ohashi’s jackpot.

Men’s 400 IM

Tokyo’s Daiya Seto producted a 3:58.65 to win the men’s 400 IM and put up the fastest time of the season thus far. The Aqua Centurions duo of Ilia Borodin and Chase Kalisz placed 2nd and 3rd to earn Aqua a total of 17 points. New York’s Brendon Smith, who has won this event twice this season, placed 8th in 4:10.45 and had his points stolen by Seto.

Aqua’s Holly Barratt, winner of the 50 fly earlier, produced a 25.31 to win the first round of the women’s 50 fly skins. Iron’s Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Melanie Henque both advance to the semi-final round  while Elena di Liddo places 4th for Aqua to also advance. Both swimmers from Tokyo and New York are eliminated.

Kromowidjojo and Barratt advance to the third and final round. If Kromowidjojo can win that will provide major momentum to Iron, helping to narrow the gap between first and second.

Though Barratt had the lead at the 25-meter turn, Kromowidjojo roared home to win the final of the 50 skins and win the 14 points. Barratt was close enough that she did not get jackpotted though.

Vladimir Morozov narrowly edges out Thom de Boer, Alessandro Miressi and Szebasztian Szabo dominated the first round of the men’s 50 freestyle skins, producing 21.21, 21.25, and 21.27 finishes, respectively. No swimmers from the New York Breakers will advance, sealing their fate for another 4th-place team finish.

Iron’s Thom de Boer was the only swimmer under 22 seconds in the second round of the skins and will advance onto the final. Aqua’s Alessandro Miressi places 2nd in 22.24 and will also advance. Despite the early momentum shown in the first round, Tokyo’s Vladimir Morozov falls to 4th ad has his points stole by de Boer who will come away with 14 points. No matter what happens now, the Aqua Centurions are going to get their first-ever team win.

Iron’s Thom de Boer produced a 22.86 to win the men’s 50 skins, though he does not claim a jackpot over Miressi. Miressi’s 7 points will buoy the Aqua Centurions’ total and leave them on top of the match team standings.
