SMU has solidified their lead in the men’s standings following Thursday’s action at the 2022 AAC Championships. The Mustang women have also taken the lead from Houston, heading into Friday with a 10.5-point margin over the Cougars.
SMU broke a 9-year-old Meet Record held by Louisville in the men’s 200 free relay. Mustangs Justin Baker (19.73), Cole Bruns (19.39), Lance Butler (19.49), and Riley Hill (19.58) teamed up for a 1:18.19, downing the previous record of 1:18.34.
Justin Baker won the men’s 50 free earlier in the session, defending his title from last year. He clocked a 19.66 tonight after a 19.61 in prelims.
SMU freshman Cotton Fields won the men’s 200 IM in a meet record, roaring to a 1:44.63. He led a tight finish by SMU, with teammates Jack Easton (1:44.86) and Colin Feehery (1:45.00) taking 2nd and 3rd. Fields led the field on the fly and back 50s, splitting 22.20 and 26.11 respectively.
Cincy picked up a win in the men’s 500 free, where Michael Balcerak clocked a 4:20.84.
SMU won the women’s 200 free relay decisively, clocking a 1:30.32. Johanna Gudmundsdottir (23.01), Gabi Grobler (22.26), Indra Vandenbussche (22.61), and Alexandra Stevens (22.44) teamed up for the win.
Johanna Gudmundsdottir has previously won the 50 free earlier in the session, posting a 22.74, 0.27 seconds faster than she led off the relay. Gabi Grobler also picked up a victory on the day, taking the women’s 200 IM in 1:58.33. Grobler was the only swimmer in the field under 2:00.
Tulane’s Lilly Byrne won the women’s 500 free, swimming a 4:47.03.
