The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) held its 63rd State Swimming and Diving Championships last weekend in Auburn, Alabama. Boaz High School won its second team title in the 1A-5A Division with 304 total points. Huntsville High School continued their dominance within the 6A-7A Division, as they picked up their 7th consecutive state title with an enormous 396 points.

Class 1A-5A Division Recap:

Gulf Shores’ team of Murray Reed (25.51), Patrick Conley (26.20), Liam Bickham (23.74), and Canyon Moyers (21.70) opened the meet with a new Class 1A-5A state record in the 200 medley relay, combining for a final time of 1:37.15. The same quartet also set another Class 1A-5A state record in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:28.09

Lamp High School’s team of Alex Jeong (49.95), Edward Lee (51.46), Paul Choi (51.88), and Alex Park (49.01) clocked a new Class 1A-5A state record in the 400 freestyle relay with a final time of 3:22.30. 

Indian Spring senior Mark Underwood won both the 100 breast and 100 fly. His 100 breast time in prelims of 55.49 was a new 1A-5A state record, and a personal best by about half a second. Underwood also won the 100 fly in a 49.98, over a second ahead of 2nd-place Adam Holbrook (51.29). His 100 fly in finals marked his first time under the 50.0 second barrier. 

John Carroll Catholic junior Michael Helton won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 332.25 in finals. He was followed by UMS Wright Prep junior Harrigan Weston (323.55) in 2nd.

  • 200 free: Lance Young – 1:40.75
  • 200 IM: Alex Park – 1:59.61
  • 50 free: Will Neville – 21.73
  • 100 fly: Mark Underwood – 49.98
  • 100 free: Murray Reed – 46.93
  • 500 free: Lance Young – 4:41.39
  • 200 free relay: Gulf Shores High School (Moyers, Reed, Bickham, Conley) – 1:28.09
  • 100 back: Adam Holbrook – 53.76
  • 100 breast: Mark Underwood – 55.67
  • 400 free relay: Lamp High School (Jeong, Lee, Choi, Park) – 3:22.30
  • 1-meter diving: Michael Helton (328.05)

Class 6A-7A Division Recap:

Huntsville’s team of Luke Bedsole (22.67), Cole Withrow (25.83), Bradford Johnson (21.78), and Myles Kimball (21.11) clocked a new state record in the 200 medley across all divisions with a 1:31.35. They did the same thing in the 400 freestyle relay, with JP Pace (47.89), Bedsole (45.32), Johnson (45.68), and Samuel Hardy (47.65) combining for a record time across all divisions in a 3:06.54.

Bedsole also won two individual events. He took first in the 200 free with a personal best time of 1:39.78, beating 2nd place Ari Azrad by almost a second (1:40.66). Bedsole also won the 100 back with a best time of 49.01, over two seconds faster than Riley Groves who touched 2nd (51.62). 

Hoover senior Victor Song swept the sprint freestyle events. He won the 50 free by half a second in a 20.90, beating junior Michael Tretyakov (21.40). He clocked a personal best time in the 100 free of 45.61 to win by a second over junior Andon Ellzey

Huntsville’s Daniel Coffman won the diving portion of the competition with a total of 407.15 points in finals. Fairhope sophomore Cooper Brechman took 2nd (360.90), while Hoover junior Owen Fuller placed 3rd (355.50).

  • 50 free: Victor Song – 20.90

  • 100 free: Victor Song – 45.61
  • 500 free: Samuel Hardy – 4:36.25
  • 200 free relay: Huntsville High School (Johnson, Pace, Withrow, Kimball) – 1:25.60
  • 100 back: Luke Bedsole – 49.01
  • 100 breast: Layne Tucker – 57.50
  • 400 free relay: Huntsville High School (Pace, Bedsole, Johnson, Hardy) – 3:06.54
  • 1-meter diving: Daniel Coffman (407.15)
