- 2022 FINA ‘A’ Cuts
In another short prelims session, featuring only the 50 free and 200 IM, Marcelo Chierighini posted the top time of the men’s 50 free. Chierighini swam a 22.26, just ahead of Gus Borges, who finished 2nd this morning in 22.33. The swims come in off the FINA ‘A’ cut of 22.18, so both we’ll need faster swims tonight for anyone to officially qualify for the World Championships team. 50 fly champion Nicholas Santos finished 7th this morning, swimming a 22.58. At 42 years old, Santos posted the fastest 50 fly in the world this year earlier in the week, so he’ll definitely be someone to keep an eye on tonight.
Similarly, Lorrane Ferreira clocked a 25.27 to lead prelims of the women’s 50 free. She was just off her entry time of 24.84. In terms of qualifying for World Championships, Ferreira needs to be a little bit faster tonight, as the FINA ‘A’ cut sits at 25.04.
Vini Lanza, who qualified for the World championships team in the 100 fly last night, swam a 2:01.56 in the men’s 200 IM this morning, earning the top seed for finals. We can expect a thrilling race tonight, as 4 men in the field, including Lanza, have been under 2:00 before. Caio Pumputis has the fastest personal best in the field, coming in at 1:57.70, and swam a 2:03.13 this morning. Gabriel Ogawa has been 1:59.92 before, and swam 2:03.59 in prelims. Leonardo Santos was 2:03.72 this morning, but has been as fast as 1:58.99. The FINA ‘A’ cut in the event is 1:59.76.
In the women’s 200 IM, Florencia Perotti led the way, swimming a 2:16.59.
