Can someone tell me why they went to timed finals for relays?
COVID, then they liked it so they stuck with it.
Some combination of 1) fewer swims on the athletes’ bodies, and 2) not giving bigger teams like Texas and Cal an even bigger advantage by the ability to swap out swimmers from prelims to finals.

Coronations are a slow process, so I expect we won’t see the collective crown descend until the last day, the last swim and, of course, the last dive! Go, Texas!
