2022 Ohio State Invite: Day 3 Prelims Live Recap

2022 OHIO STATE INVITE

We are now entering the third and final day of the Ohio State Invite. This morning will be the prelims of the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, and 200 fly, as well as the slower heats of the 1650. This evening will feature the fastest heat of the the 1650, as well as timed finals of the 400 freestyle relay.

Going into today, the Indiana women hold a slim lead over Ohio State by 5.5 points. On the men’s side, Ohio State leads Indiana by 54.4 points.

As a reminder, the top forty swimmers will advance to finals.

Women’s 200 Back – Prelims

  • NCAA ‘A’ Cut – 1:50.50

Top 10 Qualifiers:

  2. Anna Peplowski (IU) – 1:54.15
  3. Carmen Weiler Sastre (VT) – 1:54.97

Caitlin Brooks swam the fastest time of the morning with a season-best of 1:53.96. Brooks could be much quicker tonight, as her personal best is 1:50.73 from SECs in February.

Virginia Tech freshman Carmen Weiler Sastre clocked a big best time of 1:54.97 to take third, dropping nearly three seconds from her previous best which she set this fall. This swim marked only her second time officially competing the event.

Men’s 200 Back – Prelims

Cincinnati junior Hunter Gubeno raced to top seed for tonight’s finals, clocking a personal best by almost a second for a 1:41.47. Gubeno was the only swimmer of the top ten to take out his first 100 under 50.0.

Brendan Burns and Kai Van Westering took second and third for IU. Burns owns a best time of 1:39.34, and will look to challenge Gubeno tonight.

Women’s 100 Free – Prelims

Amy Fulmer and Katherine Zenick took the top two spots for Ohio State this morning, with Fulmer leading in 48.29. IU’s Kristina Paegle joins them as the only other sub-49.0 out of the morning, with a 48.75.

Virginia Tech got three of the top ten spots, led by freshman Emily Claesson. Her time this morning of 49.01 marked a new personal best by just under half a second.

Men’s 100 Free – Prelims

  • NCAA ‘A’ Cut – 41.64

Indiana’s Van Mathias led prelims this morning in a 42.15, marking a new personal best by over a second. Indiana also took four of the top six spots, with Rafael Miroslaw, Gavin Wright, and Finn Brooks joining Mathias in the A-final.

Youssef Ramadan snuck in at ninth with a 43.34. The swim was not a season-best, and is well off his personal best of 41.72.

Women’s 200 Breast – Prelims

Similar to the 100 breaststroke, Indiana’s Noelle Peplowski leads the morning in 2:08.63, followed by Ohio State’s Josie Panitz at 2:08.94. Peplowski took her first 100 out nearly a second quicker than Panitz did.

Peplowski was runner-up last year at Big Tens to teammate Brearna Crawford, who took fourth this morning in a season best of 2:09.36. With a best time of 2:07.85, she could be one to look out for tonight.

Men’s 200 Breast – Prelims

Indiana took the top three spots heading into tonight’s final. Junior Max Reich took first in a near personal best time of 1:53.98. Teammate Jassen Yep was second (1:55.81), followed by Josh Matheny (1:55.97).

Virginia Tech’s Carles Coll Marti and AJ Pouch took fourth and fifth in season best times.

Women’s 200 Fly – Prelims

Coleen Gillilan and Felicia Pasadyn clocked 1:56.15 and 1:56.78 to take first and second this morning. Gillilan brought back her second 100 almost half a second faster than Pasadyn, and is still well off her personal best of 1:53.94.

Lily Hann and Katie Forrester, both freshmen from Indiana, clocked personal bests this morning. Forrester’s swim was her first time under the 2:00.0 barrier.

Men’s 200 Fly – Prelims

Ohio State’s Chachi Gustafson decisively claimed the top seed for tonight’s final with a 1:44.65.  Although he is still off his personal best of 1:41.39, the swim was a season best.

Kentucky’s Mason Wilby swam a 1:45.52 to take the second spot. Wilby owns a personal best of 1:40. 15, and could also be much faster tonight.
