THURSDAY PRELIMS RESULTS

The second day of the 2022 Purdue Invite is underway, with the day two prelims session having taken place this morning at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.

The session got out to a fun start, where freshmen took the top four spots in the women’s 400 IM. They were led by Louisville freshman Paige Kuwata, who swam a 4:17.19. Fellow Cardinal freshman Rye Ulett swam a 4:17.66, finishing second. FIU got in on the party as well, as freshman Nicole Frank clocked a 4:18.52 for third. Another Louisville freshman, Jordan Durocher, swam a 4:19.36 for fourth place.

Louisville’s Jackson Millard, a freshman, led the field in the men’s 400 IM prelims, swimming a 3:48.99. The time comes in just off Millard’s personal best of 3:48.41, which he swam in December of last year.

The Cardinals also had a great showing in the women’s 100 fly, where Gabi Albiero posted a 51.41 to lead the field this morning. Fellow Cardinals Christiana Regenauer and Tristen Ulett were the next swimmers in, clocking 52.04 and 52.57 respectively.

Purdue snapped the Louisville hot streak, seeing Brady Samuels clock a 46.33 to lead prelims of the men’s 100 fly handily. It was a great morning swim for Samuels, coming in less than a second off his personal best of 45.64, which he swam at the Big Ten Championships last season.

Samuels would then go on to lead the field in the men’s 100 back as well. He swam a 46.43, establishing a new personal best in the event. His previous top time was a 46.68, which he swam at the 2021 Purdue Invite.

Jasmine Nocentini, Northwestern’s star sprinter has recently taken up breaststroke. She swam the 100 breast for the first time in her collegiate career a few weeks ago, and has opted to do so again at this meet. She led the field this morning by a huge margin, swimming a 58.31. It was a huge personal best for Nocentini, who swam the event for the first time at the end of October (1:00.34), then clocked a 1:00.06 the first weekend of November. She’s now brought her time into NCAA scoring contention. She was just off the NCAA ‘A’ cut of 58.10.

Purdue looked good in the men’s 100 breast prelims, where Nick Sherman clocked the top time of the morning with a 52.95. That swim marks a personal best for Sherman, who had previously been as fast as 53.62, a time which he swam at the 2019 Purdue Invite. Fellow Boilermaker Coleman Modglin touched second in 53.30, just 0.02 seconds off his personal best of 53.28.

Notably, Northwestern’s Kevin Houseman, who has a personal best of 51.23 in the event, was third this morning with a 53.42.

Southern Illinois’ Celia Pulido led prelims of the women’s 100 back by a huge margin this morning, swimming a 52.71. Pulido was the only swimmer in the field under 54 seconds this morning, going out in 25.52 and coming home in 27.09.

Louisville’s Paige Hetrick clocked the top time in the women’s 200 free (1:47.86), while fellow Cardinal Denis Loktev posted the fastest time in the men’s 200 free (1:35.62).
