The first night of the 2022 Purdue Invite is in the books. Louisville leads the team standings for both men and women through Wednesday’s action.
The Cardinals got out to a fast start, breaking the pool record in the women’s 200 free relay, and clearing the NCAA ‘A’ standard by a wide margin. Gabi Albiero (22.09), Christiana Regenauer (21.54), Julia Dennis (21.55), and Ella Welch (21.85) teamed up to post a 1:27.03, winning the race by over two seconds. Louisville blew away the NCAA ‘A’ standard of 1:28.43, automatically qualifying them for the NCAA Championships in March.
Louisville would also take the men’s 200 free relay, where Abdelrahman El-Araby (19.62), Dalton Lowe (19.07), Vlad Dubinin (19.64), and Michael Eastman (18.95) combined for a 1:17.28. They were just ahead of Purdue, who saw Nick Sherman (19.64), Brady Samuels (19.22), Michael Juengel (19.45), and Idris Muhammad (19.04) swim a 1:17.35. Both teams were under the NCAA ‘B’ standard but were roughly half a second off the ‘A’ cut of 1:16.80.
The women’s 500 free featured a thrilling race between Louisville’s Liberty Williams and Northwestern’s Lola Mull. Mull got out to an early lead, staying roughly a second ahead of Williams from the 100 turn all the way through the 400 turn. Williams was stunningly fast coming home, however, splitting 27.83 on the fourth 50, followed by a 25.85 on the final 50, for a 53.68 on the final 100. It was enough for Williams to edge Mull out at the end, finishing first in 4:40.33, just 0.2 seconds ahead of Mull (4:40.53). Both swimmers have personal bests of 4:38.
The Cardinals kept their win streak in the women’s events alive, as Tristen Ulett won the women’s 200 IM in 1:57.24. She blew past teammate Abby Hay on the final 50 after Hay had pulled ahead on breaststroke. Hay touched second in 1:57.97, while fellow Cardinal Fernanda Gomes Celidonio came in third at 1:59.14.
Northwestern’s Jasmine Nocentini would deny Louisville a clean sweep of the night’s swimming events, roaring to victory in the women’s 50 free with a 21.59. Not only was the swim good for a dominant win, Nocentini set a new personal best and broke the Northwestern program record with the performance. She blew away her previous personal best, which sat at 21.78.
Behind Nocentini, Louisville showed off incredible depth, taking second through sixth place. Christiana Regenauer (21.89), Gabi Albiero (21.90), Julia Dennis (22.42), Karoline Barrett (22.53), and Ella Welch (22.53) were the next swimmers in.
After leading prelims with a 19.44, Cal Baptist’s Remi Fabiani won the men’s 50 free tonight in 19.36.
Purdue’s Nick Sherman clocked a lifetime best of 1:42.90 in the men’s 200 IM prelims this morning. He won the event tonight, but was significantly slower, swimming a 1:44.49.
Louisville posted a 1-2-3-4 finish in the men’s 500 free, led by Gustavo Saldo, who won the race in 4:17.06. Murilo Sartori took second in 4:18.39, Denis Loktev was third with a 4:20.45, and Ilia Sibirtsev touched fourth in 4:22.60.
Louisville closed out the session with wins in the 400 medley relays. In the women’s 400 medley, Abby Hay (53.41), Cecilla Viberg (59.31), Tristen Ulett (52.00), and Gabi Albiero (47.50) teamed up to swim a 3:32.22. They were just under a second off the NCAA ‘A’ cut of 3:31.38. Notably, Louisville’s Christiana Regenauer split 51.37 on the fly leg of the Louisville ‘B’ relay. Also, Northwestern’s Jasmine Nocentini, who hasn’t typically raced breaststroke until this season, posted the fastest breast split in the field with a 58.60.
In the men’s 400 medley, Dalton Lowe (46.73), Denis Petrashov (51.75), Abdelrahman El-Araby (46.65), and Murilo Sartori (42.99) combined for a 3:08.12. Purdue was just behind with a 3:08.92, led in large part by Nick Sherman‘s 42.21 anchor split.
On the boards, Purdue was dominant on the day. The Boilermakers posted a 1-2 finish in men’s 1-meter, with Jordan Rzepka winning with a score of 400.75 and Sam Bennett (338.05) coming in second. Sophia McAfee won women’s 3-meter with a score of 335.45.
