For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of three finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final and places 17 through 24 the C final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.

With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups,” “Mids” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final, “Mid” to swimmers in the B final and “Down” to swimmers in the C final.

The Tennessee women blew the meet wide open on Thursday morning, putting nine swimmers into ‘A’ finals and ultimately exiting Day 3 with a 221.5-point lead on second-place Georgia.

The Lady Vols continued their strong showing during Friday’s prelims, advancing four women into ‘A’ finals and four into consols, including earning a #1 seed from sophomore Mona McSharry in the 100 breast.

Tennessee projects to outscore every other team based on the prelim results, despite it arguably being one of their weaker days, especially with freshman Ellen Walshe having the session off. Walshe was responsible for 64 points last night, winning both the 400 IM and 100 fly (back-to-back, no less).

Georgia and Kentucky also put four women up into ‘A’ finals this morning, with the ‘Dawgs looking to solidify second place while the Wildcats are making a charge to overtake Florida and get in the top three.

The Gators had a relatively poor showing (keeping in mind there were only three events in the session), going 1/1/3 which projects them to fall from third to fifth at night’s end.

The men’s meet is also out of reach at the top, with the Florida Gators well on their way to a 10th-straight title.

Mizzou led the way with 173 projected prelim points, largely due to putting seven swimmers into ‘B’ finals tonight. The Tigers put three into ‘A’ finals—one in each event—which tied them for second with three other teams.

The Tennessee men led the way with five swimmers moving into ‘A’ finals, including three in the 100 breaststroke. They’re currently in a tight battle for second, third and fourth with Georgia and Alabama, while Texas A&M, Auburn and Mizzou are fighting it out for fifth.
