2022 HIGH SCHOOL TEAM OF THE YEAR – CARMEL HIGH SCHOOL (IN) BOYS
The Carmel High School Boys team, from Carmel, IN, is the winner of the 2022 High School Team of the Year Swammy. This marks the second time Carmel’s boys team has won the award, having done so in 2020 as well. This is the sixth time Carmel HS has won the award overall, since the Carmel girls team has won four times, which speaks to the excellence of the program.
Carmel won the IHSAA Boys State Championship early in 2022 by well over 100 points, marking their eighth consecutive state title, all of which have come under the direction of head coach Chris Plumb. On top of that, they shattered the National High School Record in the 200 medley relay, roaring to a stunning 1:26.88. They were incredible from start to finish on that relay. Sean Sullivan led off in 21.82, Ryan Malicki then split 24.18 on breast, Aaron Shackell was 20.86 on fly, and Chris Holmes anchored in 20.02.
Though that relay was the only record, national or state, broken by Carmel at the meet, they put up a ton of fantastic performances throughout the rest of the meet. They swept the relays, taking the 200 free relay in 1:22.53 and the 400 free in a speedy 2:58.11.
They had a pair of boys well under 1:40 in the 200 free. Aaron Shackell took second in the event at the state meet, swimming a 1:36.19. Gregg Enoch, who was just a sophomore, swam a 1:37.97.
Shackell went on to win the 100 fly in 47.69 after swimming a 47.48 in prelims. The team was unbelievable in the 100 fly as well, as Leo Han and Chris Holmes both swam 48.92 in the event at the state meet. Han also posted a 49.61 in the 100 back at the meet.
Enoch went on to take second in the 500 free, posting a 4:24.82. That swim came the day after he led prelims with a 4:23.99.
Ryan Malicki was on fire in the 100 breast, winning the event in 53.89. Malicki also came in second in the 200 IM, swimming a 1:47.41.
Sean Sullivan won the 100 free with a 44.22 as well.
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
*IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER*
- Santa Margarita (CA) Girls: The Santa Margarita girls team lit it up at the CIF State Championships in May of 2022, setting a new National High School Record. The record came in the 400 free relay, where Macky Hodges (49.18), Teia Salvino (49.20), Teagan O’Dell (47.75), and Justina Kozan (48.67) combined for a blistering 3:14.80. Santa Margarita also won the 200 medley relay in 1:39.04, as well as the 200 free relay in 1:32.52. Justina Kozan was a double event winner, taking the 200 free in 1:44.63 and the 100 fly in 52.75. Teagan O’Dell won the 200 IM by a huge margin, swimming a 1:55.15, then won the 100 back in 52.27. Teia Salvino won the 50 free (22.58) and 100 free (49.34).
- Carmel Girls – The Carmel girls team, which has won the High School Team of the Year Swammy four times, was as excellent as always this year. They broke four IHSAA Records at their state meet early in 2022, including the 200 medley relay, where they swam a 1:38.55. Alex Shackell, who was in the early stages of her huge breakout year at that point, broke the IHSAA Record in the 100 fly, clocking a 51.71. Berit Berglund cracked the IHSAA Record in the 100 back, swimming a 51.50 in prelims then matching that time exactly in finals. Lynsey Bowen, who was just a freshman, swam a 4:45.15 in prelims of the 500 free, tying the IHSAA Record in the event. She went on to win the event with a 4:49.13 in finals. Carmel also won the 200 free relay in 1:32.28, and posted a 3:19.54 to win the 400 free relay.
- Brookfield East (WI) Girls – Brookfield East came in second place at the WIAA Division I State meet in November, but they had a bunch of fantastic swims. Firstly, they broke the WIAA Record with a 3:18.95 in the 400 free relay. Senior Lucy Thomas was exceptional, shattering the WIAA Record in the 100 breast, where she swam a 58.89, taking the record under 1:00 for the first time. She also came in second in the 50 free with a 21.89, which was also well under the previous WIAA Record. Maggie Wanezek, a junior, cracked the WIAA Record in the 100 back, speeding to a 51.09. She also came in second in the 100 free with a quick 48.82.
- Arrowhead (WI) Girls – Arrowhead won the 2022 WIAA Division I State meet in November, fueled in large part by a ton of depth. They also put up a phenomenal relay performance in that meet, winning the 200 free relay in a sizzling 1:31.14, which was just 0.01 seconds off the WIAA Record. On top of that relay win, senior Campbell Stoll demolished the WIAA Record in the 200 IM, roaring to a massive victory with a 1:56.73. She then went on to win the 100 fly as well, posting a 51.85. Hailey Tierney was also incredible, having an astonishing breakout performance in the 50 free, dropping from her personal best of 22.85 to win the event in a new WIAA Record of 21.84, becoming the fastest 50 freestyler in her class. She then went on to win the 100 free in a new WIAA Record of 48.52.

Congratulations Carmel Boys, Coach Plumb, Coach Pfaff and the whole staff.! Well deserved!
Bolles snub
Predicting Keller HS next year
No love for bolles boys? Faster top time than Carmel boys in all but medley relay, 100 fly and 500 free. Swim cloud simulator indicates that bolles would destroy Carmel head to head in any conceivable scoring format.
Not this year
Carmel wins all day with a full taper (like Bolles had at winter juniors) and one team per relay
Taste it
I was going on strictly hs swim results and in most dual meets, there are several relays from a team and where I’m from, 2 can score. Plus, Bowles had faster freestyle relays. I acknowledge that bolles has an advantage of getting kids from all over but I think Carmel is school of choice (I could be mistaken). I think objectively, bolles was better but weighing the catchment, they are probably near equal.
Two relays from the same team can score at FL high school state?
Just confirmed they cannot
I meant in regular hs dual meets which was generally how I compared them
Dual meets are not relevant in high school or college
You said – and I quote – “bolles would destroy Carmel head to head in any conceivable scoring format”, but in fact your argument was based primarily or exclusively on the least important format imaginable (and one which favors Bolles). Perhaps we should compare how they would perform in a marathon or an academic decathlon? LOL
Bolles is a great program, but that post was clearly just a case of sour grapes and ham-handed rationalizations. Bolles won last year. Let the Carmel kids enjoy the win this year.
You two sound like immature bratty children. Keep in mind this is high school. No one really cares that much. Let’s focus on the bigger picture and bring up the sport of swimming rather than make it a ridiculous rivalry between adolescent kids.
Head to head is the only way to measure so why score 16 or 24 lanes when realistically, they can’t all be filled in every event. Using the swim cloud simulator, the different scores in the different scoring methods would be:
College dual: Bolles 126, Carmel 80
Hs 4 lane scoring: bolles 57, Carmel 38
Hs 6 lane scoring: bolles 102, Carmel 68
Hs 8 lane scoring: bolles 157, Carmel 120
But if you did score 16 lanes, bolles would still triumph.I’m not necessarily saying the should have won but a HM is clearly deserved.
The swimcloud simulator (like your analysis) is garbage. Signing off…
One final comment (to reiterate a previous point), due to the fall high school season in FL, and the proximity of the championship meet to winter juniors, Bolles has had two full taper meets. Carmel has had one half taper meet (winter juniors).
Head-to-head does not account for the quality of a swim/time
It’s high school and an award that means what
…
Santa Margarita and Loyola boys from California deserve a look here as well. How are there no additional boys teams in the honorable mentions?
Sarasota High School Boys??? 3 peat in the fastest state
Send them to 1A and see how it goes
Wow. Admittedly biased but Santa Margarita girls not even being mentioned? Check the numbers. Relays, individual performances and incredible depth I dont see a team that could beat them. Clearly not an oversight.
Huge oversight. Santa Margarita girls from CA would have beaten most boys teams in 21-22. That team was loaded. Best team in 2021/2022 and it’s not close.
Mentioned SM but short of a correction.
I think they go on Alexa S who has better times in freestyle and butterfly than Teagan O’Dell. does in IM and and Backstroke. as a factor. Carmel did better in the IM relay and probably the 200 freestyle relay while Rancho Santa Margarita did better in the 400 free relay.
Incorrect on 200 free. Head hands down SM.
Prayers to the Carmel HS swimmer who was in a tragic car accident on his way to practice.
