2023 Futures – Ocala: Joshua Zuchowski Swims 200 Back PB Of 1:58.11

2023 FUTURES — OCALA

The 2023 Futures Championships in Ocala, Florida, has come to close. The final day of racing featured the women’s 800 freestyle, men’s 1500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 free, 200 back, and 400 medley relay.

The Sarasota Sharks decisively won the team competition, as they tallied a total of 688.50 points over the course of the meet. The TAC Titans grabbed 2nd with 329 points, while Laker Swim came out on top of a tight battle for 3rd with 232 points.

All in the all, the meet had a total of 42 swims under the Olympic Trials standards, with 29 of them marking new Olympic Trials cuts. You can view the whole Olympic Trials cut report here.

At only 13-years-old, Brinkleigh Hansen from Saint Petersburg Aquatics won the 1500 freestyle by over five seconds. Hansen stopped the clock at 16:49.78, which marks a personal best by over 10 seconds and moves her to 61st all-time in the girl’s 13-14 age group. Also breaking 17:00 was Emma Reiser and Lauren Milbaum, who posted times of 16:55.00 and 16:55.40, respectively.

The men’s 800 freestyle saw four swimmers crack the 2024 Olympic Trials standard of 8:09.69, led by Tampa Bay Aquatic Club’s Andrew Taylor. Taylor, a Florida recruit, clocked a best time of 8:06.86 to top the field by about half a second. Jacob Hamlin (8:07.37) out-touched Dylan Felt (8:07.45) for 2nd, while Kyler Heffner earned 4th in a big best time of 8:09.26.

Ohio State commit Sienna Angove picked up her 4th victory of the meet in the women’s 200 IM. Angove logged a 2:16.55 in finals, which is just half a second shy of her personal best from the Canadian Trials in March.

Laker Swimming’s Ryan Erisman secured his 4th Olympic Trials cut in the 200 IM with a winning time of 2:03.27. With his performance, Erisman moves into the top-20 all-time for the boy’s 15-16 age group at 18th. Taking 2nd in the event was Mason Herbert, who finished a few tenths back from Erisman with a time of 2:03.69.

After winning the 100 freestyle earlier in the meet, Rylee Erisman claimed her 2nd win in the 50 freestyle. The 14-year-old got her hand on the wall 1st at 26.00, which is just over half a second off her personal best that she set a few weeks ago at the Florida Age Group Championships. The men’s event belonged to Jerry Fox of the TAC Titans, who dipped under the Olympic Trials cut to win the event with a best time of 22.75.

Catherine Choate from Dynamo won the women’s 200 backstroke with a time of 2:12.02, which is just over a second off her entry time of 2:10.94. Laurel Blase was the runner-up finisher at 2:15.06, also putting her just off her entry time.

Joshua Zuchowski was the only swimmer in the men’s 200 backstroke to crack the 2:00 barrier, as he posted a 1:58.52 in finals to win the event. He was even faster in prelims, going a 1:58.11 to set a new personal best time by 0.05. 16-year-old Ethan Ekk took 2nd in a best time of 2:00.84, which moves him to 23rd all-time in the 15-16 age group and secures him an Olympic Trials cut in the event.

The women’s 400 medley relay belonged to the Sarasota Sharks, where the team of Brynn Lavigueur (1:04.29), Danica Aten (1:10.92), Addison Sauickie (1:00.20), and Angove (56.25) combined for a 4:11.66. Winning the men’s event was the TAC Titans, as William Thompson (56.29), Henry Lee (1:02.70), Colin Whelehan (54.52), and Fox (49.20) stopped the clock at 3:42.71.
